Federal abortion defunding will dwarf Polis’ abortion handout

A new abortion law is the latest example of how Gov. Jared Polis is giving leftists like Gavin Newsom and JD Pritzker a run for their money. Last week, Polis signed a measure to save the state dollars through “averted births.” SB 25-183 requires Coloradans to pay for abortions through Medicaid and the Child Health Plan Plus program so that low-income women in Colorado will have fewer children. The measure also includes language to require that public-employee insurance plans cover abortions.

With Donald Trump back in the oval office and Republican majorities in the House and Senate, there is a national countereffort underway that dwarfs Polis’ abortion business handout. The pro-life movement is working toward defunding abortion businesses nationally.

Last month, 150 pro-life leaders from Colorado and the other 49 states sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune to stop abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid dollars. Hundreds of citizen lobbyists from across the country were recently in Washington, D.C., meeting with their members of Congress to urge them to defund big abortion this year through the budget reconciliation process.

We have come close to achieving this before. In 2017, we fell just one vote short and for reasons unrelated to abortion. The measure was included in the ‘repeal and replace Obamacare’ package which failed when Sen. John McCain cast a ‘nay’ vote. In the many conversations I’ve had with some of my former colleagues in the House, newer members, and those in the Senate, it is clear there is ample support for defunding big abortion this year…
