Jeremy Pilz serves as a Legislative Assistant at Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, where he works to advance the organization’s pro-life policy goals at the federal level. Jeremy began with our Federal Affairs team in August 2023. In his role, he is responsible for reviewing legislation, analyzing federal regulations, and supporting Congressional offices with their pro-life initiatives. Jeremy plays a critical role in ensuring that pro-life bills are carefully crafted to withstand challenges from the abortion lobby. We asked Jeremy to share his experience navigating the complex policy landscape, his approach to advocating for unborn babies and moms, and what he believes will be the key pro-life priorities in the upcoming year.
SBA: What exactly does a lobbyist do, and how would you describe your role at SBA?
Jeremy: I think the term lobbyist often has a negative connotation. As a “pro-life lobbyist” I see myself more as an advocate, trying to help pro-life members of Congress do the most they can to help unborn babies and their mothers. I am officially a Legislative Assistant at SBA and the role I have is more on the “technical” side of lobbying. In other words, I help with the nitty gritty details of offering edits to legislation, helping clarify definitions, or to close loopholes so that positive pro-life bills can’t be exploited or twisted by the abortion lobby. I also assist with reviewing federal regulations and other executive actions. In short, I help congressional offices with their pro-life initiatives!
SBA: How do you define success in your work as a pro-life lobbyist, and what indicators tell you that you’re achieving your goals?
Jeremy: I think success for me is when I see members of Congress and their staff become passionate about the Life issue, or for a particular piece of pro-life legislation. Sure, there are instances where I have seen pro-life bills introduced that we have supported, but to see a member of Congress champion a pro-life bill with passion and articulation – that is success.
SBA: What do you see as the biggest challenges or obstacles in your work as a pro-life lobbyist?
Jeremy: I think the biggest challenge is misinformation. Often, it is hard to compete with mainstream news outlets and the pro-abortion lobby. They regularly push half-truths or flat out lies that make it harder to execute our goals and mission. Not only do we have to execute our mission, but we now must expend more effort to try and correct the record and prove why our mission is needed to begin with. Additionally, there is a lot happening in our world and there are many issues, so at times it is a challenge to show why protection for unborn babies and their mothers are needed now more than ever.
SBA: Obviously, with the political shifts following President Trump’s victory and the GOP maintaining control of the House and gaining control of the Senate, the political landscape in Washington has shifted. How does this impact your strategy and what you focus on as a pro-life lobbyist?
Jeremy: Yes, this is a very exciting time to be in Washington and part of the pro-life movement! It is also a challenging time. Our main goal has not changed: to end abortion and the destruction of unborn human life, but in some ways strategy does change. Under the Biden-Harris administration and the Democrat-controlled Senate, we had to call out their extreme abortion policies and work to find ways that pro-life Members of Congress could push back. Now with a GOP trifecta – House, Senate, and White House – we can do more to move the ball forward for unborn babies and moms. Now the focus is less on calling out the bad, and more on encouraging the good and celebrating when pro-life policies are put in place (which have already happened through President Trump’s executive actions!).
SBA: What do you see as the most significant policy or issue you’ll be focusing on in 2025?
Jeremy: I think the most significant policy I will be focusing on is helping to get the American taxpayer out of the abortion business. President Trump has already made this policy clear in his Enforcing the Hyde Amendment executive order, now we must get to work and help implement the policy. This means redirecting taxpayer dollars from abortion providers, like Planned Parenthood, and ensuring we invest these dollars in true health care and services for women rather than the violence of abortion.
Planned Parenthood KILLED 390,000 innocent unborn Americans in 2023. Meanwhile, they take $2 MILLION of your tax dollars. Every. Single. Day. This madness has to stop. Contact your U.S. Representative now (takes 30 seconds) and tell them to Defund Planned Parenthood NOW!
