With November being National Adoption Month, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America was excited to connect with U.S. Senator Jon Husted of Ohio. Senator Husted’s own life began with the choice for life and adoption, and today he is one of the Senate’s strongest advocates for unborn children, mothers, and families.

SBA: Senator Husted, thanks for taking some time with us. Can you share a little about your own adoption story and how it shaped your convictions on life?

Sen. Husted: Let’s just say that everything I am today . . . everything I have, all my hopes and dreams, my wonderful family – it’s all the direct result of two powerful things: the courage of my birth mother, and the love of my adoptive parents. Courage and love. My mother chose life at a difficult time. She entrusted me to a family in northwest Ohio who gave me a loving home and every opportunity. That experience planted in me a lifelong belief: every child deserves the chance to live, to be loved, and to thrive. So when we talk about adoption in the Senate, it’s not “just another policy issue” for me. It’s deeply personal.

SBA: How has that personal experience influenced your work as a senator?

Sen. Husted: It’s a huge reason why I’ve dedicated my life to standing up for the unborn and their mothers. I’d like to think that no matter what my biography is, that I’d still be the dedicated pro-lifer I am in the Senate.

After all, those pro-life principles are guided by scripture, by science, and by a straightforward believe in human rights. And yet, every vote I cast, every bill I support, I can’t help but think about the millions of children whose lives hang in the balance. Children who were just like me all those years ago. I was given a chance. Now I have a responsibility to fight so that others can have that same chance.

SBA: You’ve spoken about building a “culture of life.” What does that mean to you?

Sen. Husted: A culture of life means more than just laws that restrict abortion. We’ve seen that the other side is dedicated to finding ways around those laws. So it’s got to be about celebrating families, supporting moms, and offering real alternatives that affirm the dignity of every human being. It means empowering parents with school choice, strengthening communities of faith, and making sure every child has the opportunity to reach their God-given potential.

SBA: Finally, as someone whose life was spared by adoption, what would you say to mothers facing difficult circumstances today?

Sen. Husted: I would say this: you are stronger than you know, and you are not alone. Adoption is a beautiful, life affirming choice. Your child’s life matters and so does yours. There are people ready to walk with you, to support you, and to help you build a future filled with hope.
