Washington, D.C. – Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds took swift action Tuesday to protect unborn children and mothers in light of the Dobbs decision, requesting that an injunction against the state’s heartbeat protection law be lifted. Reynolds also urged the Iowa Supreme Court to rehear Planned Parenthood v. Reynolds to clarify that the U.S. Supreme Court’s ‘undue burden’ test no longer applies.
Notably, Iowa’s Democratic Attorney General Tom Miller declined to participate in the state’s defense of its pro-life laws.
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America praised Reynolds in a statement:
“Following back-to-back victories in Dobbs and the Iowa Supreme Court, strong pro-life leaders like Governor Kim Reynolds are working swiftly to enact the will of the people,” said SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Protections for unborn children with beating hearts and other pro-life laws have the potential to save thousands of lives a year in Iowa. Further, the Hawkeye state is proving we can ‘love them both’ by providing critical support for women and families.
“We thank Gov. Reynolds and all our local allies for their diligent work. However, Attorney General Tom Miller shamefully refuses to do his job. There is no excuse for this extremism. We urge all Americans who stand with women and children and reject the Democrats’ radical pro-abortion agenda to make their voices heard at the ballot box this year.”
Iowa is working hard to support mothers through its new MOMS (More Options for Maternal Support SF2354) legislation, a statewide program that promotes healthy pregnancies and childbirth. Through state funds, it will provide much-needed support such as parenting education, nutritional services, and material items for women who find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy. The state is also providing at-risk families with tools they need to be successful and providing safe pathways to adoption through their Family First program.
Broad legal protections for unborn children and mothers are in effect in 12 states, with more poised to follow swiftly. On Tuesday the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lifted an injunction against a similar Tennessee law that protects unborn children from the moment their heartbeat can be detected.
