Mass. on Track to Join 10 States + D.C. Allowing Abortion at Any Point

BOSTON, Mass. – A bill allowing abortion at any point in pregnancy is one step away from becoming law in Massachusetts. The Senate passed the measure this afternoon after Democrats fast tracked the measure to bypass the full committee process so the full body could pass the bill before the legislature adjourns today.

The bill makes performing an abortion throughout the second and third trimesters legal. Current Massachusetts law allows elective abortion until 24 weeks with “fetal anomaly” exceptions after that point allowing abortions for babies with disabilities and life-limiting diagnoses.

Second- and third-trimester abortions are generally done by dismemberment or labor induction. The latter may result in a live birth if the abortionist has not first delivered a lethal injection into the baby’s heart (“fetal demise”), which many admit they do not. According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute, over 60,000 abortions occur after 15 weeks each year – a point by which science shows the baby feels pain.

SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser mourned the news of the extreme law passing:

“Massachusetts already allows abortion in the first 24 weeks, but that isn’t enough for Democrats whose party holds the position of no limits on abortion whatsoever. If Gov. Healey signs this bill into law, Massachusetts will join 10 states and Washington, D.C. with an all-trimester abortion policy where babies are killed after the point they can survive outside of the womb.

“These extreme laws that only 10% of Americans support are enabled by the ‘states-only’ philosophy on abortion. The GOP must abandon the failed ‘leave it to the states’ position and move the country toward a national protection for unborn children across this nation.”

Ten states plus the District of Columbia currently allow abortion at any point, including Vermont, New Jersey, Minnesota, and Colorado. The U.S. is 1 of 8 countries in the world along with China that allows abortion at any point, according to a 2024 study. Another study completed in 2024 shows 46 of 50 countries in Europe limit abortion after 15 weeks.
