Asks Congress to Protect Unborn Children from Late-term Abortions
Washington, D.C. – Tonight President Donald Trump rebuked Democratic Party leaders who support abortion on demand through birth and even infanticide and renewed his call for Congress to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act – legislation to limit late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy, a point when science shows unborn children can feel pain – as he announced his 2020 campaign:
“Virtually every top Democrat also now supports taxpayer-funded abortion right up to the moment of birth – ripping babies straight from the mothers’ womb. Leading Democrats have even opposed measures to prevent the execution of children after birth. You saw that in Virginia.
“Republicans believe that every life is a sacred gift from God. That is why I have asked Congress to prohibit extreme late-term abortions.”
The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) responded in a statement:
“President Trump has been consistent and fearless in calling out extremist Democrats’ support for abortion on demand through birth and even infanticide, drawing a clear contrast with his own record of pro-life leadership,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser, who served as chair of President Trump’s Pro-life Coalition after securing four pro-life commitments from the nominee during the 2016 campaign. “We thank him for his commitment to protecting babies born alive in failed abortions and ending the cruelty of late-term abortion when unborn children can feel excruciating pain, and we join him in urging Congress to pass these popular bills.
“The stakes of this election could not be higher as Democratic contenders line up to pander to the radical abortion lobby and declare war on even the most popular, modest pro-life policies, like the Hyde Amendment. This cycle SBA List will spend $41 million expanding to priority states, working closely with local allies on the most ambitious pro-life legislative agenda yet to aggressively challenge, erode, and finally, overturn Roe v. Wade. Our team will be working hard through Election Day to educate millions of voters, expose the extremism of Trump’s opponents, elect pro-life leaders to Congress and in the states, and win a second term for the most pro-life president in history.”
Amid nationwide outcry sparked by efforts in New York, Virginia, Illinois, and other states to legalize abortion on demand through birth, national polling released by SBA List shows that 77 percent of voters support legislation to ensure that a baby who survives a failed abortion be given the same medical treatment as any other baby born prematurely at the same age (55 percent strongly support) and 62 percent of voters oppose legislation to allow late-term abortions, even up to the point when a woman is in labor (50 percent strongly oppose). Democrats in Congress have repeatedly blocked the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.
President Trump in his State of the Union address called out the Democratic Party for their support of late-term abortion and even infanticide and called on Congress to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
