Dannenfelser: Down Syndrome Abortion Ban Creates a Safe Haven from Lethal Discrimination
Washington, D.C. – Today Ohio Governor John Kasich signed into law a bill that would prohibit abortions from being performed because of a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome. The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) released the following statement in response:
“Ohio has given unborn children with Down syndrome and their families an early Christmas present and created a safe haven from lethal discrimination,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Research has shown that individuals with Down syndrome are among the happiest people in the world and bring tremendous joy to their families – but, tragically, mixed messages from society and many in the medical community target them for abortion at alarming rates. In some Western nations these vulnerable children are even on the verge of being eliminated from society through selective abortion, and this is considered ‘progress.’ In a time of growing acceptance of human diversity and rejection of outdated biases against people with different abilities, such extreme intolerance stands out as a great injustice. We thank Governor Kasich and the Ohio legislature for their leadership and hope other states will be quick to follow their example.”
Research by SBA List’s education arm, the Charlotte Lozier Institute, and the Jerome Lejeune Foundation USA has found, and the experience of thousands of families has shown, that children with Down syndrome are extraordinarily happy and bring their families enormous blessings, despite particular challenges they may face.
Susan B. Anthony List and its partner super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, knocking on more than 1.1 million doors in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women. The SBA List is a network of more than 600,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
