82% of Missouri Voters Back Late-term Abortion Limits

Washington, D.C.  – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today slammed Planned Parenthood’s lawsuit seeking to strike down the Missouri Stands for the Unborn Act:

“Once again the abortion lobby is running to the courts to foist an extreme agenda on Missourians, who soundly reject abortion on demand, especially when the unborn child can feel pain,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Missouri lawmakers were acting on the will of their constituents when they passed groundbreaking protections for unborn children and their mothers earlier this year. An overwhelming majority of Missourians across the board – Democrats, Independents, self-described pro-choice voters, women in greater numbers than men – support legislation to stop late-term abortions on babies who can feel excruciating pain. We stand with the people of Missouri and believe their will should prevail.”

Polling released by SBA List finds that 82 percent of Missouri voters – including 66 percent of Democrats, 83 percent of Independents, 83 percent of women, and 61 percent of self-described pro-choice voters – support a law prohibiting late-term abortions (only 18 percent support allowing late-term abortions).

The Missouri Stands for the Unborn Act contains some of the nation’s strongest protections for unborn children and their mothers, including provisions protecting unborn children from abortion at eight weeks of pregnancy and later; limiting late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy, when science shows unborn children can feel pain; declaring the state of Missouri and all its political subdivisions a “sanctuary of life”; banning discriminatory abortions for reasons of sex, race, or Down syndrome; requiring abortionists to have adequate malpractice insurance; and more. The lawsuit challenges the gestational age limits in the law and also challenges the ban on discriminatory abortions.

SBA List is a network of more than 787,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
