Bill Would Force Taxpayers to Bankroll the Abortion Industry Under Guise of COVID-19 Relief

Washington, D.C.Today the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) condemned the so-called American Rescue Plan and announced it will score against the bill ahead of the Senate’s upcoming weekend vote.

As written, the bill allows taxpayer funding for abortion contrary to the decades-old Hyde amendment that has applied to every other COVID-19 relief package.

SBA List’s score letter reads in part:

“While prior bipartisan COVID relief packages have included Hyde protections on funding streams that fall outside of existing limits on abortion funding, this bill departs from the status quo by leaving funds open to use for abortion. COVID relief money should be used for life-affirming purposes… we strongly support and will score in favor of amendments to mitigate the funding of abortion, abortion coverage, or abortion providers.”

SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser added:

“Pro-abortion forces emboldened by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are shamelessly exploiting the COVID-19 crisis to expand abortion on demand, paid for by taxpayers. By failing to include Hyde Amendment protections and forcing taxpayers to bail out the abortion industry, their so-called ‘rescue plan’ abandons some of the most vulnerable Americans – unborn children and their mothers. Their agenda will divide, rather than unite our nation as this administration promised.

“We are grateful to our pro-life Senate allies who are working hard to fix the worst anti-life aspects of this bill, with our team’s assistance. Susan B. Anthony List urges all senators to vote against any COVID-19 relief bill that expands taxpayer-funded abortion, and we will ensure that every American knows how their senator votes.”

Democrats’ COVID-19 relief proposal would:

  • Create a slush fund for Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry.
  • Fund community health care centers without applying the Hyde Amendment.
  • Expand taxpayer-funded abortion coverage via Obamacare and COBRA insurance plans subsidies.
  • Increase funding for abortion through global health activities.

A Marist/Knights of Columbus poll released last month found that 58% percent of Americans – including 65% of Independents and nearly one third of Democrats – oppose using taxpayer money to fund abortions in the United States.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
