Becerra’s Radical Pro-Abortion Record Disqualifies Him to Lead HHS
Washington, D.C. – Today the U.S. Senate Finance Committee will vote to advance the nomination of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra for secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services. Ahead of the vote, the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) announced the group’s intention to score the full Senate vote.
SBA List first opposed Becerra’s nomination when it was announced in December. Since then, the group has worked to expose his record on abortion which is detailed at https://sbaprolife.org/becerra and includes:
Last month, SBA List led a coalition of more than 60 national and state pro-life leaders in a letter urging U.S. senators to reject Becerra’s nomination and this week organized thousands of constituent phone calls to key senators.
The score letter made public by SBA List today reads, in part:
“It is difficult to imagine someone who has spent more time opposing pro-life laws and efforts on every front than Xavier Becerra. Giving Mr. Becerra the reins at Health and Human Services would be catastrophic for countless unborn children and their mothers. He also has no regard for religious or conscientious objections to paying for or participating in abortion services. We understand that a president has the right to his cabinet, but Mr. Becerra has proven himself to be an enemy of the health of women and the unborn. He cannot be trusted to champion Americans’ health and is not qualified to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services.”
SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser further condemned the nominee’s extremism, saying:
“Xavier Becerra is a hardened pro-abortion activist unfit to lead HHS. During his confirmation hearings, Becerra refused to disavow his support for forcing taxpayers to fund abortion on demand, or his vote in favor of partial-birth abortion – a barbaric procedure during which an unborn child is partially delivered and then killed.
“We thank pro-life leaders in the Senate who have worked to expose the California attorney general’s pro-abortion extremism and urge all senators to reject his nomination. This vote will be reflected on SBA List’s National Pro-Life Scorecard and we will work tirelessly to inform Americans about how their senator votes on this important post.”
SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
