WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) responded to reports that Cecile Richards, president of America’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, met with reporters to discuss Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe.

“While Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards ‘huddled’ with the media yesterday, Terry McAuliffe has repeatedly refused to tell Virginia voters that he supports a platform of abortion on-demand, up until the moment of birth, including abortions for the purposes of sex-selection – all paid for by Virginia taxpayers. McAuliffe has even opposed common ground health and safety standards for Virginia abortion facilities.  He says he supports women, but he’d allow filthy and dangerous Gosnell-like clinic conditions to fester.

“In the Commonwealth, more than 80 violations were discovered inside abortion facilities last year alone. Unsafe, unsanitary conditions – not to mention barbaric abortion practices – continue to be exposed nationwide. Shame on McAuliffe for refusing to join the General Assembly and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli in standing up for Virginia women. McAuliffe’s extreme abortion position flies in the face of Virginia voters.”

A poll previously commissioned by the Susan B. Anthony List shows that Virginia voters are less likely to support Terry McAuliffe when they learn about his extreme positions on abortion. Key findings from the poll follow:

  • 48 percent of Virginia voters said that they were less likely to vote for McAuliffe after learning he opposes banning late term abortions, requiring parental consent before a minor can get an abortion, and a 24‐hour waiting period. (35 percent much less likely).
  • 67 percent of Virginia voters said that they were less likely to vote for McAuliffe after learning he supports allowing sex-selective abortion. (55 percent much less likely).
  • 55 percent of Virginia voters said that they were less likely to vote for McAuliffe after learning he supports taxpayer funding of abortion (42 percent much less likely).
  • 48 percent of Virginia voters said they were less likely to vote for McAuliffe after learning he opposes requiring abortion clinics to have the same health and safety standards that hospitals do to protect their patients. (34 percent much less likely).

The telephone survey was conducted among 500 likely voters, with an oversample of 200 interviews of Northern Virginia women, on March 24-26, 2013 by NMB Research. The study has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.38%.

The Susan B. Anthony List, and its affiliated Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
