SBA Pro-Life: Injunction Comes at the Expense of Unborn Lives

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Abortions of babies who have a heartbeat and can feel pain will continue in Wyoming due to a judge blocking Wyoming’s Life is a Human Right Act on Wednesday evening. Teton County Judge Melissa Owens, who issued the injunction, is the same judge who stopped Wyoming’s trigger law to protect the unborn from going into effect after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

The injunction comes four days after the act became law and returns Wyoming to a state that allows abortion until “viability,” which the law defines as the stage when a baby can “live by natural or life-supportive systems outside the womb.” The law does not establish a limit based on a specific gestational age, meaning the point of viability is open to interpretation by abortionists.

SBA Pro-Life America’s State Policy Director Katie Daniel shared her reaction:

“This injunction comes at the expense of unborn lives. The will of the people in Wyoming is clear: Wyoming is a state that values life and the safety of women and girls. It’s disappointing to see this judge grant this request for the abortion industry and the radical pro-abortion minority. In the Dobbs era, the right of the people to speak through their elected representatives and to make life-related policy for themselves must be respected.”

This week, abortion advocates also filed a lawsuit against the state’s new chemical abortion law. Wyoming became the first state in the nation to prohibit the prescription of the dangerous abortion drug regimen on Friday when Gov. Mark Gordon signed the bill into law.

In addition to the chemical abortion law, Gov. Gordon recently signed a measure to extend postpartum Medicaid coverage from two months to a full year. Wyoming’s Medicaid extension is a part of a trend where pro-life states are advancing measures to support moms. State legislatures are currently considering bills to allocate dollars for pregnancy help centers, eliminate sales tax on baby items, create childcare tax credits, and support pregnant women and new mothers in a variety of other ways.
