Earlier this week, the pro-life members of the House came together to defend Life and challenge the inclusion of abortion in the House health care reform bill (H.R.3200). Chairwoman of the House Pro-Life Women’s Caucus, Jean Schmidt (R-OH), was joined by Congresswomen Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Virginia Foxx (R-NC), and Mary Fallin (R-OK), as well as pro-life leaders Rep. Chris Smith and Rep. Joe Pitts.
The health care bill has been introduced and is currently in committee in the House of Representatives. As Chairwoman Rep. Schmidt explains,
“Unless amended, this bill will mandate abortion coverage for nearly every insurance plan in America… Because if abortion mandates are not specifically excluded, the courts will rule that they are included.”
“Now is the time that members of Congress need to ask these tough questions of the administration… If they don’t mean to have taxpayer funding pay for abortion, they need to make it explicit.” Rep. Bachmann
“If this plan is not fixed to where it makes it very clear that it is not to fund abortion, I will not support this legislation.” Rep. Fallin
“As a pro-life woman, there is absolutely no way that I can support any health care bill that does not contain a specific and enforceable abortion exclusion.” Rep. Foxx
