Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith
Mississippi (Republican)
Summary
118th Congress Sen. Hyde-Smith has stood up against the extremist nominees of the pro-abortion Biden-Harris administration and against pro-abortion action both in the administration and through legislation advanced by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Sen. Hyde-Smith has voted consistently to defend the lives of the unborn and infants. This includes stopping hard-earned tax dollars from paying for abortion, including abortion travel expenses, whether domestically or internationally, and pushing back on the administration’s extreme executive actions on abortion.
Senator Hyde-Smith has demonstrated strong leadership as the Chair of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus, fighting for compassionate legislation to protect unborn children and their mothers. She introduced the SAVE Moms and Babies Act of 2023 (S. 95), which would prohibit the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from approving new abortion drugs, require in person dispensing of mifepristone, and prohibit the use of mifepristone after 10 weeks gestation. In a floor statement following the March for Life, Sen. Hyde-Smith celebrated the Dobbs decision and that, for the first time in 50 years, the American people and their elected representatives can act to protect unborn life. On the Senate floor, she called out the FDA’s decision to illegally distribute dangerous abortion drugs by mail and telemedicine. Additionally, she spoke about how the pro-life movement cares for both mothers and unborn babies through the more than 2,700 pregnancy resource centers across the country. Sen. Hyde-Smith spoke out against S. 631, the UPHOLD Privacy Act, because the bill prevents pro-life entities from sponsoring ads designed to help provide women and girls with trustworthy support during pregnancy and makes it harder for states to enforce their own laws protecting unborn children. She spoke on the Senate floor celebrating the first anniversary of the landmark Dobbs decision, which rightfully put the issue of abortion back in the hands of the people and their elected representatives. Sen. Hyde-Smith spoke at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing against the deceptively-named Equal Rights Amendment, which would enshrine unlimited abortion on demand into the United States Constitution. She also introduced S.Res. 107, “recognizing the expiration of the Equal Rights Amendment proposed by Congress in March 1972, and observing that Congress has no authority to modify a resolution proposing a constitutional amendment after the amendment has been submitted to the States or after the amendment has expired.” In a Committee on Appropriations hearing, Sen. Hyde-Smith called out Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra's Office of Refugee Resettlement for illegally using taxpayer dollars to transport pregnant, unaccompanied girls across state lines to obtain abortions. In a hearing, Sen. Hyde-Smith also questioned FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf about the studies that the FDA considered concerning the effects of dangerous abortion drugs and the FDA’s failure to respond to citizen petitions challenging the approval of and regulatory changes to the dispensation of abortion drugs. Sen. Hyde-Smith led a letter with Sen. Lankford to pharmacies regarding abortion drug distribution, reminding them that they are accountable under both state and federal law for the dispensation of abortion drugs. Sen. Hyde-Smith sent a letter to the heads of the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and Treasury condemning a proposed Biden-Harris administration rule that weakens conscience protections for pro-life Americans and financially benefits the abortion industry.
In a speech on the Senate floor, Sen. Hyde-Smith blocked a Democratic bill that would protect traffickers taking women and girls across state lines for abortions to cover up abuse. She also blocked a Democratic bill (S. 3612) that would have serious consequences for the protection of human life in its earliest stages and put the conscience protections of American citizens at risk. Sen. Hyde-Smith introduced the Reproductive Empowerment and Support through Optimal Restoration (RESTORE) Act, to expand access to restorative reproductive medicine. She spoke on the Senate floor about this bill for the anniversary of the Dobbs decision. Sen. Hyde-Smith pushed Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Califf at a hearing to answer for the risks posed to women and girls as a result of the FDA’s removal of the in-person dispensing requirement for abortion drugs. She also led multiple amicus briefs for members of Congress in the abortion drug case Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. Food and Drug Administration. She introduced S. 3713, the Protecting Life and Integrity in Research Act of 2024 to stop taxpayer dollars from going to research that uses human fetal tissue obtained from abortions and to stop the trafficking of body parts of aborted babies. She introduced S. 3610, the Pregnancy Center Support Act of 2024 to create a tax credit to incentivize voluntary contributions to pregnancy centers providing support to pregnant and parenting women and families. Sen. Hyde-Smith introduced S. 3611, the Let Pregnancy Centers Serve Act of 2024 to roll back the Biden-Harris administration’s policy stripping Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funding from pregnancy centers. Sen. Hyde-Smith spoke on the Senate floor praising the work of pregnancy centers, specifically one in Mississippi, in supporting women and families. Sen. Hyde-Smith co-led a bicameral letter to a number of companies highlighting the issues with dispensing dangerous abortion drugs.
117th Congress Senator Hyde-Smith has stood up against extremist nominees of the pro-abortion Biden-Harris administration, against pro-abortion action both in the administration and through legislation advanced by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Sen. Hyde-Smith has voted consistently to defend the lives of the unborn and infants. This includes stopping hard-earned tax dollars from paying for abortion, whether domestically or internationally, and protecting health care provider rights for those who refuse to engage in brutal abortions.
Senator Hyde-Smith introduced S. 78, the SAVE Moms and Babies Act, which would prohibit the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from approving any new abortion drugs or from weakening current restrictions on the dangerous drugs. She also introduced S.77, the Protecting Life and Integrity in Research Act, which would prohibit the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services from conducting any research using human fetal tissue from an induced abortion. Sen. Hyde-Smith led a letter urging the FDA to enforce longstanding safety regulations on abortion drugs and to end dangerous runarounds of these protections under the guise of medical research, as well as a bicameral letter opposing the FDA’s weakening of safety protocols for these dangerous drugs and filed an amendment to retain the existing protocols. During a later hearing, she pressed the FDA Commissioner on the harms of weakening these protocols. She co-led a public comment letter asking HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra to withdraw the Biden administration's proposed rule to eliminate a 2019 Trump-era rule requiring separate payments for abortion coverage in taxpayer-funded Obamacare exchange plans, and later introduced a Congressional Disapproval Resolution to rescind the Biden-Harris administration's regulation obscuring abortion coverage through Obamacare. She also introduced an amendment to S. Con. Res. 5, the Budget Resolution that would stop the expansion of chemical abortion drugs at the federal level. Along with the rest of the Mississippi delegation and Congressman Chris Smith, Sen. Hyde-Smith co-led the pro-life congressional amicus brief in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization late-term abortion Supreme Court case, and hosted the Mississippi Attorney General and pro-life leaders in Senate briefings related to the SCOTUS late abortion case. Representing Mississippi, she spoke outside the Supreme Court at the pro-life rally on the day of Dobbs oral arguments and gave speeches defending life during a Senate press conference and colloquy on the eve of oral arguments in the Dobbs Supreme Court case. She sent a letter demanding that Google stop silencing pro-life views and reverse unjust censorship and co-led bicameral letters supporting ethical standards regarding human fetal tissue and opposing the FDA's decision to make chemical abortion more easily accessible during the pandemic. Sen. Hyde-Smith also spoke at a press conference denouncing the Women's Health Protection Act (better described as the Abortion on Demand Until Birth Act). The Supreme Court's ruling in Dobbs gave the authority to enact limits on abortion to both state and federal lawmakers. Sen. Hyde-Smith is among a select group of courageous Members of Congress who quickly accepted their responsibility to protect unborn children nationally by cosponsoring the Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act in the fall of 2022.

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith
Mississippi (Republican)
Summary
116th Congress Senator Hyde-Smith has voted consistently to protect the lives of unborn babies and infants as well as the consciences of taxpayers who don’t want their hard-earned tax dollars paying for abortion domestically or internationally. While the pro-abortion majority in the U.S. House of Representatives continually sends the Senate bills that roll back pro-life protections, the Senate has made it their priority to confirm judges and justices who will respect the constitution and leave legislating to the legislative branch.
Senator Hyde-Smith led efforts in the Senate throughout the year to push for the finalization of the abortion separate payments rule. She also introduced S. 3072, the Support and Value Expectant (SAVE) Moms and Babies Act. Sen. Hyde-Smith led a bicameral letter urging the FDA to uphold restrictions on chemical abortion, to protect women's health.
