Americans of Every Background Reject Pro-Abortion Extremism & Want Greater Protections for Life

Washington, D.C.Today Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America celebrated as Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, a pro-life Democrat, signed two significant pro-life bills into law. The state legislature previously passed the bills with bipartisan support:

  • S.B. 388, introduced by State Sen. Sharon Hewitt, prohibits abortion drugs from being dispensed without an in-person visit to a licensed physician and establishes penalties for abortionists who knowingly violate the law, particularly if it results in death or serious injury to the woman.
  • S.B. 342, introduced by Democratic State Sen. Katrina Jackson, strengthens existing protections for unborn children on the books in the event that Roe v. Wade is overturned.

“Louisiana’s strong new safeguards for unborn children and their mothers set a proud bipartisan example, in contrast to leading Democrats who push a radical agenda of abortion on demand up to birth,” said SBA Pro-Life America’s Southern Regional Director Caitlin Connors. “In Louisiana and nationwide, Americans of every background – including many rank-and-file Democrats – reject abortion extremism and favor greater protections for life. If the draft opinion in the Dobbs case holds, they all will soon have their right to enact life-affirming policies restored. We thank Gov. Edwards for his courage and all our local allies advocating tirelessly for women and children.”

Multiple peer-reviewed studies confirm that women are at risk of severe side effects after taking chemical abortion pills, including heavy bleeding, intense pain, and even death. Women are also twice as likely to be admitted for surgery if their abortion pill-related complications are miscoded by emergency room personnel as a natural miscarriage.

In addition to Louisiana, Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, Montana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas have enacted state-level safeguards against mail-order abortion drugs, with additional states considering action.

Alternatives to Abortion: Louisiana’s “Women’s Right to Know Law” ensures that women are informed that the father of the baby is liable for child support if a woman chooses not to have an abortion, that there are state agencies that can assist women during and after pregnancy, and that adoptive parents often pay the medical costs associated with carrying a child to term.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America is a network of more than one million pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
