Most Americans would be shocked to learn that hundreds of millions of their taxpayer dollars are funneled to the abortion industry every year — despite the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal funding for the 96% of abortions that are elective (e.g., not for rape, incest or the life of the mother).
The answer: Big Abortion has mastered an end run around the Hyde Amendment, forcing taxpayers to be involved in the abortion business. Businesses like Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion chain, exploit federal funding for “non-abortion services” through Medicaid, Title X and other programs, freeing up other resources to perform nearly 400,000 abortions annually — all while collecting close to $2 million in tax dollars every day.
Since its bipartisan passage in the 1970s, the Hyde Amendment has saved over 2.5 million lives by preventing abortion funding in certain government programs (like Medicaid). Yet taxpayer dollars are being commandeered to prop up the abortion industry through subsidies — a workaround that pumps hundreds of millions of tax dollars into businesses that profit from ending the lives of babies in the womb and harming women.
Planned Parenthood alone raked in almost $700,000,000 and ended almost 400,000 lives in a single year, according to their last report. 97% of the time a pregnant woman walks into Planned Parenthood looking for help, she’s sold an abortion. The numbers show their business model is abortion, political activism and now gender transition “services” – not health care.
Planned Parenthood’s largest stream of federal funding comes through Medicaid reimbursements for their “other services.” But as former Planned Parenthood director Mayra Rodriguez explained, these funds support the abortion infrastructure — from covering utilities, to staffing, and even patient intake for abortion-related operations.
Rodriguez is a former Planned Parenthood center director in Arizona. She was a whistleblower about the abortion giant’s gross abuse of taxpayer funds and negligent patient care.
“Under federal law, we were under a strict directive to use federal funding, like Medicaid dollars and Title X funding, only for non-abortion services”…“but Planned Parenthood kept finding ways around that.”

Despite the profit-driven abortion lobby’s claims, defunding businesses like Planned Parenthood would not cut women’s Medicaid benefits or leave them without care. Many more women already go – and will continue to go – to community health centers that are vastly more accessible. In fact, these community health centers outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities 15 to 1 and offer far more comprehensive services — without ending lives in the process and subjecting women and girls to “care” that does more harm than good.
Furthermore, Planned Parenthood’s non-abortion services have been sharply declining, as abortions, transgender “treatments,” and political spending have gone up.
Women deserve quality health care, rather than Planned Parenthood’s “conveyor belt”-style business. Even The New York Times and NPR are now reporting on Planned Parenthood’s atrocious conditions. The Times exposé of February 2025 described leaking sewage, botched abortions and a culture of patient neglect.
Taxpayer dollars should never be required to support an industry that profits from the destruction of human life and exploitation of women. It’s time for Congress to fully defund the abortion industry. The Hyde Amendment is vital — but we must close this funding loophole that has been exploited by Big Abortion for far too long, forcing American taxpayers to fund the abortion industry.
