Ron Paul: A Libertarian for Life

Unfortunately, many Libertarians are pro-abortion. It seems their firm reliance on individual liberties and limited government often leads them to the philosophical conclusion that government has no business telling a woman what to do with her own body.

Thankfully, the most popular Libertarian in the country, Texas Congressman, and presidential candidate, Ron Paul, has asserted his pro-life beliefs. Specifically, he has refused to accept the notion “that believing in liberty means you can kill the unborn.” Rep. Paul also recently signed SBA List’s Pro-Life Presidential Leadership Pledge.

Recently, Ron Paul released a statement concerning his budget priorities if elected to the presidency. One of his pledges is especially encouraging for all pro-life Americans. He stated:

I will veto any spending bill that contains funding for Planned Parenthood, facilities that perform abortion and all government family planning schemes.

Like millions of Americans, I believe that innocent life deserves protection and I am deeply offended by abortion. It is unconscionable to me that fellow Pro-Life Americans are forced to fund abortion through their tax dollars.

As a Congressman, I’ve never voted for any budget that includes funding for Planned Parenthood. Instead, I’ve introduced the Taxpayers’ Freedom of Conscience Act to cut off all taxpayer funding of abortions, so-called “family planning” services and international abortions.

According to Paul, libertarianism and being pro-life are part of the same belief system. Politico reports that at a recent Iowa event, Rep. Paul explained, “Life comes from our creator, not our government. Liberty comes from our creator, not from government. Therefore, the purpose, if there is to be a purpose, for government is to protect life and liberty.”
