The Message-Tested Abortion Narrative That Can Win Votes For GOP Candidates In The Midterms
Massachusetts just passed a law legalizing abortion up to birth, potentially exacerbating an electoral vulnerability for pro-abortion candidates nationwide.
Following Governor Maura Healey’s (D-MA) decision to sign a barbaric law allowing abortion up to the moment of birth, SBA Pro-Life America released a memo demonstrating the benefits of consistent pro-life messaging and the unpopularity of abortion laws like Massachusetts’.
Massachusetts Abolishes ALL Protections for the Unborn
On Aug. 10, Healey signed a law replacing all of Massachusetts’ existing restrictions on abortions after 24 weeks, well after the point when babies can feel pain, only requiring sign-off from the abortionist paid to abort the baby. The new text of the law states, “If a pregnancy has existed for 24 weeks or more, an abortion may be performed by a physician based upon the professional judgment of the physician.”
Only 10% of Americans support late-term abortion, so it’s no surprise that Americans across the board were horrified by the news:

In response to Massachusetts’ gruesome law, SBA Pro-Life America sent a memo to candidates for state and federal offices on the law, key findings on how pro-life positions impact races, and where Americans stand on late-term abortion.
SBA Finding: Bold Messaging on Pro-Life Issues Wins Votes
The memo, published Aug. 25, pointed to message testing showing that certain pro-life messages shifted votes significantly. SBA found that such messages move the overall margin towards the pro-life candidate by between 4.4 and 5.0 points in swing races, compared to baseline support in a control group. And in the 2026 election cycle so far, SBA’s message testing reveals an even larger swing when Democrats’ radical support for aborting pain-capable babies is pitted against Republican proposals to protect the unborn: a swing of 5.3 to 6.6 points.
Calling all pro-life Republicans! THIS issue is a huge liability for Democrats–and can help you WIN your election ⬇️

SBA also pointed to specific successful messages that move voters. For example, SBA spoke to voters about Democratic states and candidates who support late-term abortion in the 7th, 8th, or 9th month of pregnancy, emphasizing abortions that take place when the baby is perfectly healthy, all organs are formed, and the baby can see, hear, suck her thumb, feel pain, and survive outside the womb. SBA found that voters were consistently moved by factual messaging that babies can feel pain from abortion during this period and much earlier, even early in the second trimester.
The memo added that these findings were buttressed by consistent observations from SBA canvassers over the course of visiting 6 million homes. The memo states, “’Normie’ voters, including persuadable Democrats, are generally shocked and outraged to learn that anyone supports elective abortion late into the second and third trimesters.”

SBA Pro-Life America and its affiliated entities plan to spend $80 million to protect life across America in the midterms. The groups’ voter contact program—the largest and most effective of its kind in the country—includes reaching 10 million voters across Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Iowa, Montana, South Carolina, Georgia and Texas.
Juxtaposing Americans Views on Abortion Laws with Democratic Messaging
Following the discussion of SBA findings and volunteer observations, the memo uses Democratic message testing and prominent polls on Americans’ abortion views to show that there is significant room for national action to protect the unborn.
These polls showed minimal support for laws like Massachusetts’s that allow abortion up to birth, while indicating high levels of support for protecting the unborn in the second or third trimester. A July 2026 McLaughlin & Associates poll revealed:
“52% of general election voters say abortion should not be legal, or only legal in cases of rape, incest, or to save the mother’s life. An additional 24% say that abortion should only be legal up to a certain point; the majority of these voters would limit abortion after 15 weeks or earlier. Only 18% say abortion should be legal for any reason, at any time.”
A National Solution: Ending Late-Term Abortion in the U.S
Despite these polls, many Democrats have thrown their support behind a bill that would bring abortion up to birth to every state in the nation. The Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which has no less than 208 co-sponsors, would effectively eliminate protections for babies in all fifty states. Under this law, babies are completely stripped of protections before viability while being left to the tender mercy of the men profiting from their deaths after viability. The WHPA empowers the abortionist to determine whether the baby has met the standard of viability and whether he should be allowed to abort the baby even if she is viable. Worse, the WHPA makes clear that this barbaric standard is the floor, not the ceiling for the nation.
SBA strongly opposes the WHPA’s effort to make the entire country adopt the new Massachusetts’ law that allows elective abortion at any point in pregnancy.
SBA is fighting for babies in the bluest of blue states. In response to the radical law, SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser stated, “It should shock the conscience that tens of thousands of unborn Americans are barbarically dismembered limb by limb and torn apart every single year. Sadly, that number will only increase with Gov. Healey’s approval of the Abortion Up Until Birth Bill.”
Dannenfelser argues that “The GOP must abandon the ‘leave it to the states’ position – a stance that permits egregious late-term abortion laws like this one – and advance national protections for unborn children. Without a minimum national standard, the United States remains 1 of only 8 countries worldwide that allows abortion at any point in pregnancy. We must do all we can to turn the page on America’s ugly chapter of late-term abortion.”
