Planned Parenthood alone received nearly $700M from taxpayers while killing almost 400,000 babies in one year

Washington, D.C. – Over 183 pro-life legislators in 49 states representing the National Pro-Life Leaders Network have sent a letter to members of Congress encouraging them to stop the flow of American tax dollars toward the abortion industry. According to their last annual report, Planned Parenthood alone took the lives of nearly 400,000 babies and received almost $700 million – nearly $2 million a day – from taxpayers in just one year.

The letter addressed to Leader John Thune, Speaker Mike Johnson, Sen. Mike Crapo and Rep. Brett Guthrie urges Republicans to include a measure defunding Planned Parenthood and abortion businesses in the budget reconciliation bill which is scheduled for markups on Tuesday. Recent reconciliation bills have included a provision to stop funneling American tax dollars to Big Abortion, falling just one vote short in 2017 when Sen. John McCain voted against the ‘repeal and replace Obamacare’ package.

The letter reads in part:

“We are deeply concerned with the way that big abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood prey on unborn children and hurt women, all while receiving hundreds of millions of dollars from American taxpayers. . . Many of our states have already acted to stop state Medicaid dollars from going to Big Abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood. It is time for Congress to stop federal Medicaid dollars from going to Big Abortion.”

Pennsylvania State Rep. Kathy Rapp, a signer of the letter, says women on Medicaid deserve better than what Planned Parenthood offers:

“By giving Planned Parenthood more than $500 million in Medicaid dollars each our, Americans are funding neglect, incompetence, abuse and the abysmal treatment of women. As documented by the New York Times, Planned Parenthood has a record of substandard ‘care’ including botched abortions, incorrectly inserted IUDs, open sewage and more. This month, it was reported a Planned Parenthood incorrectly administered HIV and syphilis tests and may not have followed up with patients who could have received inaccurate results. Worst of all, Planned Parenthood is responsible for the deaths of millions of unborn children and young women like Lexi Arguello, Cree Erwin and Alyona Dixon. When we defund big abortion, women will be much better served by the community health clinics that outnumber Planned Parenthoods 15 to 1 in the U.S.”

Planned Parenthood has decreased its non-abortion services to women. Since 2010, taxpayer funding has increased 43% while cancer screenings, breast exams and pap smears have all fallen by more than 70%. Planned Parenthood’s contraception services are also down by 39%.

Another signer of the letter, Florida State Rep. Jennifer Canady said:

“With over 1 million abortions in our country over the last year, the American taxpayer is subsidizing the leading cause of death. Who would those precious children have grown up to be? How many teachers, medical professionals, entrepreneurs and public servants have we lost? How many of us have been robbed of someone who would have been a friend, spouse or close member of our family? We have a Republican trifecta in Washington and now is the time to defund big abortion.”
