Pro-life Groups to Launch National Coalition to “Stop the Gosnells” Tomorrow

Washington, D.C. ─ As new accounts of severe negligence and abuse in the U.S. abortion industry come to light, the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today called on Congress to advance Rep. Trent Franks’ Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 1797). The legislation will be revised this afternoon in a committee markup to safeguard babies nationwide by banning abortion past 20 weeks gestation. Tomorrow national and statewide pro-life groups, led by the SBA List, will launch the Stop the Gosnells coalition dedicated to exposing the horrors of the late-term abortion industry and encouraging legislative response.

“The abortion industry nationwide is rife with the brutality and abuse revealed during the Kermit Gosnell trial. We praise Congress’ recent action not only to protect the lives of children capable of feeling pain, but to learn more about the practices going on inside late-term abortion facilities throughout the country,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “It is imperative that we examine how the scourge of late-term abortion impacts women, children, abortion-industry employees, and our communities – and we look forward to seeing these concerns addressed by Congress. Tomorrow, a national coalition of pro-life groups will launch the Stop the Gosnells coalition in order to encourage these very efforts.”

Last month, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, chaired by Congressman Fred Upton (R-MI), sent a letter to public health officials in each state demanding answers as to how they regulate abortion facilities. The House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), also sent a similar letter to state attorneys general.

Previously, SBA List grassroots activists sent nearly 40,000 messages to Congress encouraging their representatives to support a ban on late-term abortion in the District of Columbia and nationwide.

The SBA List has compiled an ever-expanding fact sheet on abortion industry negligence and brutality occurring nationwide.

The Susan B. Anthony List and its affiliated Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women at all levels of government.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
