SBA List President Will Address Democrat Abortion Extremism & the State of the Pro-life Movement in Speech Wednesday
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Susan B. Anthony List is challenging Democratic Senators who claim to be pro-life to oppose the abortion language in the Party Platform approved this weekend by the DNC Platform Committee. For the first time, the platform language calls for the repeal of the Hyde Amendment, longstanding bipartisan legislation which protects the conscience rights of taxpayers by ensuring public funds are not used for abortion on-demand.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List will address this and more in a speech delivered Wednesday, July 13 at 10 AM in the Murrow Room at the National Press Club. Ahead of the speech, Dannenfelser offered the following comment:
“When it comes to abortion, the platform Democrats are expected to ratify in Philadelphia is unrecognizable compared to twenty years ago, when the party claimed to ‘respect the individual conscience of each American’ on the abortion, including members of the party. The 2016 platform is dramatically out of step with the position previously taken by several Democratic Senators, including Tim Kaine, currently being considered as Hillary Clinton’s running mate.
“Senators Bob Casey, Joe Donnelly, Tim Kaine, and Heidi Heitkamp have all previously stood up for the conscience rights of taxpayers, in support of the Hyde Amendment. Will they defend the principles they have stood up for in the past, or submit to the national party apparatus, beholden to the abortion lobby? They cannot claim to be pro-life if they support forcing Americans nationwide to be complicit in abortions through their tax dollars. This is a gross violation of conscience rights.”
“To his credit, Senator Joe Manchin, a pro-life Democrat, called the new platform language on abortion ‘crazy.’ We agree. It is also an offense to the one-third of Democrats who call themselves pro-life nationwide, and to the memory of great pro-life leaders like Democratic Gov. Bob Casey Sr., father of Sen. Bob Casey, who was notoriously denied the opportunity to speak at the 1992 Democratic National Convention because of his pro-life position. We urge Senators Casey, Donnelly, Kaine, and Heitkamp to disavow the new language.”
