SBA List announces support for Rep. Chris Smith’s (R-NJ) Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act
Washington, D.C. – Today, the Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) called on Congress to immediately pass the Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act introduced today by Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ). The bill would require clear disclosure of abortion coverage for each plan offered on the health insurance exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act.
“The Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act addresses just one of the many clandestine abortion funding problems in Obamacare,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Without this legislation, millions of Americans are likely to be unknowingly enrolled in health plans that include abortion coverage. Enrollees will not know they must pay an ‘abortion surcharge’ – that will go into an abortion slush fund – until it is too late. Obamacare is an all-out assault on conscience rights and we’re thankful to the pro-life Members of Congress likes Reps. Chris Smith and Dan Lipinski working to stop it.”
Research done by the Charlotte Lozier Institute revealing a complete lack of transparency regarding abortion coverage in the Multi-State Exchanges was cited in Rep. Smith’s “Dear Colleague” letter announcing introduction of the bill. Lozier researchers called numerous health plans offered as a part of the newly created Multi-State Exchanges to determine which plans offered abortion and discovered it was nearly impossible for individuals to know which plans force enrollees to pay a mandatory abortion surcharge.
The Charlotte Lozier Institute has also released a new study which finds that between 71,000 and 111,500 additional abortions per year could be heavily subsidized by taxpayers via federal premium tax credits of the Multi State Plans and Medicaid expansion in Obamacare.
