Washington, D.C. – Today Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed the Human Rights and Heartbeat Protection Act (S.B. 23) to protect unborn children from abortion when a heartbeat can be detected, one day after the state legislature sent it to his desk.

The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised the signing of the bill in a statement:

“We thank Governor DeWine for delivering swiftly on his promise and our pro-life allies in the state legislature who have worked tirelessly over the years to enact this law, which has the potential to save thousands of vulnerable unborn children in Ohio every year from the time their heartbeat can be detected,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Ohioans, like most Americans, overwhelmingly reject the extreme status quo of abortion on demand through birth imposed by Roe v. Wade. Across the nation we see a growing momentum, informed by science and compassion, to recognize the humanity of the unborn child in law. We congratulate the people of Ohio on this victory and hope to see more states follow their example.”

Dr. Kathi Aultman, a former abortionist and associate scholar with SBA List’s research arm Charlotte Lozier Institute, traveled to Ohio to give testimony on the bill.

SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
