Pro-life Bills Could Save Thousands of Unborn Children a Year

Washington, D.C. –  The Ohio legislature has sent to Governor John Kasich’s desk two pro-life bills: H.B. 145, which ends dismemberment abortion, and H.B. 258, which bans abortion when a baby’s heartbeat can be detected. The heartbeat bill passed for the second consecutive session, by a vote of 53-32 in the House of Representatives and 18-13 in the Senate. Gov. Kasich has pledged to veto the heartbeat bill, while Governor-elect Mike DeWine has pledged to sign it into law. Gov. Kasich has not yet said if he would sign the dismemberment ban into law.

In response, the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) offered the following statement:

“The American people have decisively rejected the extreme status quo of abortion on demand through birth imposed by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade nearly five decades ago,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Momentum is growing around the country to humanize our laws. The two bills passed by Ohio lawmakers have the potential to save thousands of unborn children a year – precious children with beating hearts, who are cruelly torn apart daily in abortion facilities. Scientifically and morally, it is impossible to deny that they belong to our human family and deserve protection.

“We thank State Senator Christina Hagan, a member of SBA List’s National Pro-Life Women’s Caucus, and her colleagues in the legislature for their steadfast determination to save the lives of unborn children and protect mothers. We urge Governor Kasich to sign both these compassionate bills, which clearly reflect the will of Ohioans. He would be in good company with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, who signed similar protections for babies from their first heartbeats into law earlier this year, and would show courageous leadership at a critical moment for human rights in America.”

SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
