Washington, D.C. –  A new poll released today by Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) and the Christian Civic League of Maine finds that:

  • 62 percent of Maine voters – including 60 percent of Independents, 44 percent of Democrats, 64 percent of women, and over a third (38%) of self-described pro-choice voters – oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.
  • When told the legislature is considering a bill that would require taxpayer funding of abortion for Medicaid enrollees no matter the reason for the abortion, 62 percent of voters remain opposed to expanding taxpayer funding of abortion in Maine.

A bill to require MaineCare as well as private insurers to pay for abortions, at an estimated cost to taxpayers of more than $1.3 million through FY 2023, passed out of committee on a party-line vote last month. The state legislature is also considering a bill that would allow physician assistants and other non-doctors to perform abortions.

“A strong majority of Maine voters – Democrats, Independents, women, and even significant numbers of self-described pro-choice voters – oppose taxpayer funding of abortion,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Maine lawmakers should follow the will of their constituents and not force them to pay for abortions.”

“There is strong consensus against taxpayer funding of abortion in Maine,” said Carroll Conley, executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine. “We urge legislators of both parties to stand together and reject forcing Maine taxpayers to pay for abortions.”

The Tarrance Group conducted telephone interviews of 400 registered Maine voters between April 29 and May 2, 2019. The margin of error associated with a sample of this type is + 4.9% in 95 out of 100 cases.

SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
