Pro-life Groups Request the Removal of Pro-Abortion OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro
Pro-life Coalition Asks Secretary Pompeo to Continue to Lead on Life

Washington, D.C.
– The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) and pro-life coalition members have sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to request the removal of Luis Almagro for consideration for a second term as Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS). Despite the United States’ efforts to promote life-affirming policies, Almagro continues to promote abortion on demand throughout the Latin American region.

The letter comes at a time of renewed effort by the Trump administration to advance pro-life policies both domestically and overseas. Secretary Pompeo has played a key role in advancing the President’s pro-life agenda, working to ensure that America continues to be a pro-life leader on the world stage.

The letter reads in part:

“Within the first year of his mandate as Secretary General, Mr. Almagro had multiple meetings with representatives from International Planned Parenthood Federation and Center for Reproductive Rights to dialogue about ‘strategies’ to advance the legalization of abortion in a region that is overwhelmingly pro-life. In 2016, when the Zika virus epidemic was at the center of international health concerns, Mr. Almagro issued an official press release calling it a ‘historic opportunity’ to promotion abortion in the region. We believe that his record of abortion advocacy warrants a change in leadership at the OAS, and respectfully as that the U.S. support an alternative candidate for the position.”

Over 25 pro-life organizations backed the letter, including March for Life, Americans United for Life, National Right to Life, The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Students for Life, among others.

SBA List is a network of more than 837,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
