Pompeo, Azar Lead 32 Nations in Standing Up to Pro-Abortion Radicals at the UN & WHO

Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today praised the Trump administration for its leadership on the Geneva Consensus Declaration, signed by 32 nations representing 1.6 billion people, stating that there is no international right to abortion.

On Thursday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Health & Human Services Alex Azar co-hosted a multinational virtual signing ceremony, along with the governments of Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, and Uganda.

“We thank Secretary Pompeo and Secretary Azar for leading the multinational effort to stand up to pro-abortion radicals at the UN and the WHO,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Abortion is not health care. Sovereign nations have the right to protect their most vulnerable citizens, including the unborn, and to be free from bullying and coercive efforts to expand abortion on demand. From day one, President Trump and his administration have worked to stop the exportation of abortion, making respect for life the official policy of the United States in our international relations. We join our friends around the world in celebrating this landmark declaration, which builds on the Trump administration’s commitment to promote authentic human rights and dignity at every turn.”

In addition, nine member nations of the Organization of American States (OAS) signed a joint statement affirming the right to life of every human being and the sovereign right of nations to make their own laws related to the protection of life from the moment of conception.

Alfonso Aguilar, president of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, added:

“President Trump is standing for the defense of life in the Americas like no other president in history. At a time when the Inter-American Commission and Court of Human Rights, which ironically are supposed to promote and defend human rights in the region, are actively seeking to undermine the fundamental human rights of the unborn, the United States, acting in unison with eight other OAS member states, is raising its voice to say in no uncertain terms that the Organization of American States and its affiliate bodies must respect the sovereignty of the counties of the Western Hemisphere to enact legislation that protects life from the moment of conception.”

In August 2019, Pompeo and Azar sent a joint letter inviting world leaders to join the U.S. in standing against efforts within the United Nations to create an international right to abortion on demand. The letter followed a joint statement at the 2019 World Health Assembly, delivered by the U.S. and eight other countries (Brazil, Egypt, Ghana, Haiti, Indonesia, Iraq, Nigeria, and Saudi Arabia), condemning the interpretation of ambiguous terms such as “sexual and reproductive health and rights” to impose a pro-abortion agenda.

SBA List is tracking the pro-life accomplishments of the Trump-Pence administration, as well as the abortion extremism of the Biden-Harris ticket at www.LifeOnTheBallot.com.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
