Gov. Abbott’s Special Session Agenda Prioritizes Safeguards for Women & Unborn Children
Washington, D.C. – Today the Texas Senate passed S.B. 4, legislation sponsored by Democratic State Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. that guards against the expansion of dangerous mail-order chemical abortion drugs. The bill is one of Governor Greg Abbott’s short-list priorities for the special session called earlier this month.
The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) celebrated in a statement:
“We’re encouraged to see the Senate pass this critical legislation to protect Texas women and their unborn children,” said SBA List State Policy Director Sue Liebel. “Chemical abortion is a growing threat across the nation. While the profit-driven abortion industry downplays the risks, these potent drugs are not safe either for unborn babies or their mothers. Research shows chemical abortions are even more dangerous than surgical abortion with a fourfold higher rate of complications, which can include severe bleeding, infection, incomplete abortion, or even death. Yet the Biden FDA recklessly seeks to turn every post office and pharmacy into an abortion center, leaving women to fend for themselves without medical supervision.
“We thank Governor Abbott for prioritizing the safety of women and girls, State Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. for his courageous leadership in authoring this legislation, the senators who have joined him as co-authors and all our pro-life allies for their advocacy of this bill. While their Democratic House counterparts literally fled the state to avoid voting on priority legislation, the Senate is acting on the will of Texans as well as a nationwide groundswell of pro-life momentum that has resulted in about 90 new pro-life laws this year alone.”
State Sen. Lucio commented:
“I’m against abortion. I think that life should be from conception to natural death….Through this legislation we are addressing something most important…We are trying to save the mother by not having pharmaceutical companies, drug companies, mail dangerous drugs to someone that doesn’t have a background and would not be able to respond to any complications that lead to death.”
A recent analysis by Tessa Longbons, a research associate at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, finds that chemical abortions are increasing rapidly in the United States and available with almost no medical oversight. Furthermore, while chemical abortion has led to multiple known deaths and hundreds of hospitalizations, adverse events are significantly underreported.
