Americans Deserve Answers on Walz’s Limits, Babies Born Alive & More
Washington, D.C. – As JD Vance and Tim Walz face off in the only vice presidential debate of 2024, Walz has not yet answered several significant questions on abortion:
- Does Walz support ANY limits on abortion, or does he want America to mimic what he did in Minnesota – no protections for unborn children at any point?
- As governor of Minnesota, Walz signed one of the country’s most extreme laws to remove all limits on abortion at any point in pregnancy in Minnesota.
- As a U.S. senator, Harris co-sponsored legislation that would block any state in the country from placing limits on abortion and effectively mandate all-trimester abortion without limits throughout pregnancy. The Biden-Harris administration strongly supported this bill. Harris refuses to specify any limit on abortion she can support and recently called for eliminating the filibuster to pass the Democrats’ national abortion mandate.
- Late-term abortions are not “rare”: Around 10,000 abortions a year occur after 21 weeks of pregnancy, mostly for the same reasons as earlier abortions. At least 55,000 abortions a year occur after 15 weeks of pregnancy, a point when science shows unborn babies can feel pain.
- In the last debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, a moderator falsely claimed, “There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it’s born.” Data show at least eight babies in Minnesota died without medical care after surviving abortion attempts while Walz was governor. Why did Walz strip born-alive protections out of state law and even stop data from being reported?
- The Abortion Survivors Network and SBA Pro-Life America have documented hundreds of instances of babies surviving abortions, yet only 35 states have some protections for these vulnerable children.
- In Congress, Walz voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. When the bill came up for a vote again, he “accidentally” voted for it, but went out of his way to apologize and correct the record – calling it a mistake. Then-Senator Kamala Harris also voted twice against the legislation.
- Research indicates nearly a quarter of a million U.S. women a year experience unwanted or coerced abortions. In Minnesota, Walz signed legislation removing informed consent protections and safeguards for women against abortion coercion. What, if anything, would a Harris-Walz administration do differently to ensure women aren’t pushed into abortions they don’t want?
- Countless American women – including Britney Spears– have experienced abortion coercion, often from partners, with over 60% of women who had abortions reporting pressure to abort from boyfriends, family or other sources.
- Some women have even experienced a new form of domestic violence where they are poisoned by abortion drugs. Yet the Biden-Harris administration allows mail-order abortion drugs without any in-person doctor visit where warning signs of trafficking and abuse could be identified, and Democrats continue to spread dangerous misinformation about pro-life laws that hurts women and needlessly scares them from seeking needed emergency care.
- 83% of Americans support pregnancy centers, which offer vital material, medical and educational support to mothers both during their pregnancy and after their baby is born. Why did Walz eliminate funding to provide alternative choices to abortion for Minnesota women?
- In 2022, nearly 3,000 pregnancy centers nationwide provided $367 million in goods and services (such as free ultrasounds, diapers, formula, baby clothes, prenatal and parenting education, financial and housing assistance, and more) to women and families, with eight in 10 centers providing medical services.
- While Kamala Harris has praisedefforts to shut down pregnancy centers, Senator JD Vance co-sponsored the Standing With Moms Act.
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser commented:
“Americans overwhelmingly favor limits on abortion at least by a point when unborn babies feel pain, and they support the vital safety net that pregnancy centers, maternity homes and other charitable organizations provide. These voters make up the majority, yet so far they have heard nothing from Harris and Walz that remotely attempts to meet them where they are. In contrast, President Trump, JD Vance and the GOP support the right of the people to set limits on abortion and provide real options for mothers in need. The American people deserve answers on how Tim Walz and Kamala Harris are going to prove they value moms and their babies, not just abortion.”
