Pro-life Movement Ready to Support Women & Families Ahead of Landmark SCOTUS Decision

Washington, D.C.The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) celebrated today as Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves (R) signed the Pregnancy Resource Act into law. Sponsored by House Speaker Philip Gunn, the law establishes a $3.5 million tax credit to help pregnancy resource centers serve women and children in their communities and is the first of its kind in the country. SBA List Southern Regional Director Caitlin Connors and Anja Baker, Mississippi coordinator for SBA List’s Her PLAN, attended the signing.

SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser praised Reeves and the Legislature, saying:

“We thank Governor Reeves, Speaker Gunn, Jameson Taylor and all our local allies for backing front-line heroes in the fight to save lives. Pro-life pregnancy centers in Mississippi and across America offer loving alternatives to abortion, providing vital services typically at no cost. Their mostly volunteer staff often does it on a fraction of the budget of abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood, which rakes in half a billion in taxpayer dollars a year.

“Coupled with strong state laws protecting unborn children and their mothers, including the limit on painful late abortions after 15 weeks which is currently before the U.S. Supreme Court, Mississippi shows the pro-life movement is ready to support women and families and build a culture of life in a nation without abortion. We hope elected leaders everywhere follow their lead.”

Reeves commented:

“Mississippi has an unwavering commitment to ensuring that every heartbeat inside the womb has the opportunity to beat outside the womb…today, we take another step towards protecting the sanctity of life and standing up for the unborn.”

In February, Her PLAN teamed up with Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch to promote the “Empower Women Promote Life Donation Drive” benefitting nearly two dozen pregnancy centers across Mississippi.

Mississippi is home to more than 30 life-affirming pregnancy centers that provide care and practical support to women and babies before and after birth. In 2019 alone, these centers provided $1.9 million in services and materials to more than 12,000 people. 2,700 pregnancy centers nationwide provide essential medical, education and support services to millions of clients a year.

In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case involving a Mississippi law that limits abortion after 15 weeks, the Supreme Court will address whether all pre-viability abortion limits are unconstitutional. A decision is expected in the spring or summer of 2022.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
