Manchin has Flip-Flopped on Taxpayer Funding for Planned Parenthood,
America’s #1 Abortion Business

Washington, D.C. – Today the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) announced a $785,000 issue advocacy campaign to educate West Virginia voters about Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) support for taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion business. The $600K television ad buy will begin Saturday on broadcast and cable across the Mountaineer state, with an additional $185K campaign on radio.

“Senator Joe Manchin claims to be pro-life but has flip-flopped to side with Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business. When the abortion chain was caught on tape discussing their involvement in the brutal harvest and sale of aborted babies’ organs, Sen. Manchin initially voted to get taxpayers out of it. Since then, he has caved to pressure from Democratic party leadership and the abortion lobby to vote in support of Planned Parenthood and said he would do so again,” explained Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of Susan B. Anthony List. “West Virginia is one of the most pro-life states in the nation. Mountaineers want Sen. Manchin to step up and stand with them, not the radical abortion lobby. This multi-media campaign backs up our efforts to reach voters on the ground at their doors where our team is talking to them about Senator Manchin’s record. He is sadly out of step with the majority of West Virginians who don’t want any part in the abortion industry.”

A partial script of the TV ad is as follows:

“VO: In West Virginia we believe in the sanctity of life. But Senator Joe Manchin voted to allow federal funding for Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion business in the country.

“SENATOR MANCHIN: I voted to fund Planned Parenthood.

“VO: Manchin said he’d do it again.

“SENATOR MANCHIN: I will vote to fund Planned Parenthood.”

Background:

  • April 2011: Manchin voted against a resolution that would have barred the use of taxpayer funds in a continuing resolution from going to Planned Parenthood.
  • August 2015: Manchin cast a pro-life vote when he voted for Cloture On S. 1881, A Bill To Prohibit Federal Funding For Planned Parenthood.
  • December 2015: Just a few months later, Sen. Manchin voted against an amendment to remove a section of an Obamacare repeal bill that would have prohibited funding for Planned Parenthood.
  • March 2017: Most recently Sen. Manchin voted with pro-abortion Democrats against a resolution that would nullify an HHS rule that prevents states from restricting federal family planning funding to Planned Parenthood.

Susan B. Anthony List has been active in West Virginia most recently holding a press conference outside of Sen. Manchin’s Charleston office urging him to respect the will of West Virginians by supporting the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Additionally, SBA List’s field team of more than 450 pro-life canvassers recently expanded to the state and is visiting voters’ homes to educate them on Sen. Manchin’s record and the importance of voting pro-life. The ground activity is part of an historic effort to visit more than two million homes across the battleground states of Indiana, Ohio, Florida, Missouri, West Virginia, North Dakota, and Montana ahead of Election Day 2018.

Susan B. Anthony List and its partner super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, visiting more than 1.1 million homes in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women. SBA List is a network of more than 630,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
