This summer, the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America team brought Her PLAN leaders to Washington, D.C. for a series of meetings with congressional offices. As SBA’s flagship initiative to strengthen the pro-life safety net, Her PLAN builds networks of life-affirming, community-based resources — helping providers connect with one another and equipping communities to close gaps in care and better serve women and families.
At the center of Her PLAN’s work are their state coordinators. These coordinators work with local communities to identify existing life-affirming resources for pregnant and parenting moms. When these resources too often fall short of meeting the specific and complex needs of vulnerable mothers, they work with the community to identify and fill those needs – gaps in the pro-life safety net. Through these efforts to launch local “Her Communities,” Her PLAN is reshaping the landscape for vulnerable women and families so they have the support they need to thrive – right in their own neighborhoods.
The Capitol Hill trip was an opportunity to bridge this local work with national leadership. Coordinators shared stories from their states, thanked lawmakers for championing life, and offered training on resources such as Her PLAN’s Directory — to help congressional offices better serve their constituents.
During meetings on Capitol Hill, our team made a point to thank lawmakers for their continued commitment to protecting life and supporting community-based care. Our state coordinators personally expressed gratitude for these lawmakers’ leadership and made it clear how much women and families in their districts benefit from their pro-life work in Congress. These conversations were not abstract or political — they were personal and practical. We wanted every office to know that when they support life in the halls of Congress, they are standing with real women and families who depend on the communities of care Her PLAN is building.

In these meetings we also highlighted the work Her PLAN is doing directly in the communities these lawmakers represent. Many congressional offices were encouraged to learn how state coordinators, through Her Communities, are fostering networks of pregnancy resource centers, maternity homes, foster care closets, recovery programs and more, that serve their constituents.
For example, in the entire New River Gorge region of West Virginia, there wasn’t a single pregnancy resource center. Teen moms, single moms, and women facing deep poverty were navigating pregnancy alone, with no local place to turn for support, education, or basic care. That changed when Her PLAN helped bring community leaders together to launch a brand-new center. Today, that center is welcoming women with compassion and equipping them with practical resources — from childcare and housing connections to addiction recovery support.

The center is now a place where women can find help and resources that were previously out of reach. And it all came together because Her PLAN was able to connect the right people. While on Capitol Hill, our team shared this story directly with West Virginia Congressman Riley Moore. It gave him a clear picture of how his constituents are being impacted by Her PLAN’s work on the ground in his state.

Another key purpose of the visit was to offer congressional offices training on how to use Her PLAN’s Directory. The Directory helps providers and community leaders connect, creating stronger and more coordinated networks of care that women and families can rely on. Since congressional offices that assist local residents often receive calls and requests from women in need, the training ensures staff know how to use this resource to point constituents toward local providers who can offer the specialized support and services they need.
Several offices expressed interest in participating in these trainings, including Nebraska Senator Pete Ricketts’ office. His team had previously completed a session, but because his team has added new staff, they requested another round of training. Senator Ricketts’ office has already seen how this resource can make a direct difference, and they were eager to bring new staff up to speed.

Along with offering Directory trainings and sharing stories of hope, our team also updated these Congressional offices on the serious concerns about the increasing spread of abortion drugs in the communities they represent. These drugs are often pushed through back channels, undermining state protections, putting women at risk, and ending the lives of thousands of unborn babies. We emphasized to lawmakers that this issue requires vigilance and clear policy solutions to ensure women are not left vulnerable to the predations of the abortion industry.
Throughout the trip, Her PLAN coordinators met with numerous more congressional offices, including:
Each meeting deepened the connection between national leaders and the local networks working daily to serve women and families in the communities they represent. Whether we were sharing the stories of Her PLAN’s work to build local communities of support for women and families, or offering Directory training for congressional staff, these conversations made it clear that SBA and our partner organization Her PLAN are focused not just on policy, but on ensuring women and families have the resources they need to thrive.
