Wisconsin set to become 15th state to protect pain-capable babies

Washington, D.C – This afternoon the Wisconsin State Assembly passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. The legislation previously passed the State Senate and now heads to the Governor’s desk. In March, Gov. Scott Walker sent an open letter in firm support of the legislation, saying, “I will sign that bill when it gets to my desk and support similar legislation on the federal level. I was raised to believe in the sanctity of life and I will always fight to protect it.”

The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) has been working with Senator Mary Lazich, State Senate President and member of the SBA List National Pro-Life Women’s Caucus, as well as other pro-life leaders to advance the bill. The group’s research arm, the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), also provided expert witnesses to testify before the joint House and Senate committee including Maureen Condic, Ph.D., Dr. Donna Harrison, and Dr. Sheila Page.

Upon passage of the bill, SBA List Vice President Hon. Marilyn Musgrave offered the following comment:

“With Governor Walker’s signature, Wisconsin will soon become the 15th state to enact legislation protecting babies after five months – more than halfway through pregnancy.

“We thank our allies at Wisconsin Right to Life and in the state legislature for their incredible efforts to pass this legislation. Sen. Lazich’s courage and dedication exemplify the unique role women leaders’ play when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable among us.

“Momentum is building as we await a vote in the U.S. Senate on the federal version of this bill. The majority of Americans, women in even higher numbers than men, support the pro-life position to stop abortion after five months. This common-sense, compassionate stand is not only morally just, it is smart politics.”

A November 2014 poll from Quinnipiac found that 60 percent of Americans, including 56 percent of Independents and 46 percent of Democrats, support the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Including Gov. Scott Walker, 13 GOP presidential candidates have publicly endorsed Pain-Capable legislation.
