Americans Overwhelmingly Reject Democrats’ Pro-Abortion Extremism

Washington, D.C.Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America joins advocates for children with disabilities in calling for Massachusetts Democrat Michael Hugo to resign. Hugo, who is chair of the Framingham Democratic Committee, claimed that pregnancy center medical personnel are not competent to interpret an ultrasound and implied that abortions are an alternative to the cost of providing special education for children with Down syndrome.

SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser called on Democratic Party leaders to condemn discrimination abortions:

“The abortion lobby is wildly out of step with the American people in treating children with a disability as a commodity and a tax burden – the opposite of their families’ experience. Tragically, parents all too often face pressure to abort based on fear and stereotypes, resulting in as many as 67% of unborn children with Down syndrome being aborted in the United States. But as people with Down syndrome themselves report – and as those who love them are well aware – 99% of these individuals lead happy lives.

“Hugo’s comments reflect the formal position of leading Democrats who refuse to name a single limit on abortion they support. They are radically out of touch with public consensus, medical and civil rights progress, and basic humanity. All decent Americans, including Democrats brave enough to reject the party line, should speak out against pro-abortion extremism.”

A Marist/Knight of Columbus poll in January found:

  • Seven in 10 Americans support limiting abortion to, at most, the first three months of pregnancy.
    • Includes 72% of women, 71% of Independents and nearly half of rank-and-file Democrats.
  • 86% of Americans oppose abortion based on the expectation that the child will have Down syndrome (60% strongly oppose).
  • 91% of Americans support pregnancy centers, which offer vital material, medical and educational support to mothers both during their pregnancy and after their baby is born.

Also last month, a federal district court maintained Arizona’s law that protects unborn children from discriminatory abortions. Judge Douglas Rayes, an Obama appointee, stated further that under Dobbs, “the Constitution does not protect a right to elective abortion.”

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America is a network of more than one million pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
