SB 31 Stops Abortion Lobby Misinformation from Endangering Women

Austin, Texas – Gov. Greg Abbott has signed the Texas Med Ed bill to protect pregnant women’s lives from abortion misinformation. Passed unanimously in the Senate and with only six ‘no’ votes in the House, the bipartisan bill requires continuing education for medical and legal professionals on the ability and necessity of providing emergency care to pregnant women under Texas’ pro-life law.

Texas is among the first states to pass a Med Ed bill to end the confusion caused by the abortion lobby through direct education to doctors. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem signed the first Med Ed bill into law in 2024, North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong signed a similar measure in April,  and this year Kentucky passed a law dispelling that women can’t get medical care under the state pro-life law. Other states including Florida have taken similar steps administratively.

After Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill, he said Texas is a leader on the life issue:

“Nothing is more precious than life itself,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “Texas has led the nation in protecting the life of both the child and the mother by passing laws that extend healthcare coverage to 12 months postpartum, appropriate over $400 million for women’s health programs, and invest $200 million towards the Thriving Texas Families program. This new law will ensure that doctors provide mothers with the care they need during a medical emergency. Texas will continue to fight for every child – born and unborn – and for all expectant mothers.”

Sue Liebel, state affairs director for SBA Pro-Life America, celebrated the victory for Texas moms:

“Pro-life laws protect babies and women. We thank Republicans and Democrats for coming together to reject the abortion lobby’s misinformation on pregnant women’s ability to receive emergency care under pro-life laws. Though every state with a pro-life law has a ‘life of the mother’ provision that allows doctors to continue to rely on their reasonable medical judgment, the abortion industry has sown confusion on this fact to justify their position of abortion without limits. Texans of all philosophies can celebrate that moms will be better protected against abortion lobby lies through direct education to our doctors and lawyers.”

“Texas led the nation with the 2021 Heartbeat Act and now leads by being among the first states to pass a Med Ed law. For too long misinformation and fearmongering by those who wish to see pro-life laws fail has gone unchecked. The education required by SB 31 makes it crystal clear that doctors and hospitals must continue to provide excellent care to women and babies in the womb and to treat mothers in obstetric emergencies.”
