Vital Legislation Protects Children & Taxpayers; Advances President Trump’s Pro-life Commitments

Washington, D.C. – This afternoon the U.S. House of Representatives passed the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2017 (H.R. 7) by a vote of 238 to 183. Co-sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL), this bipartisan bill establishes a permanent, government-wide prohibition on federal funding for abortion, prohibits federal subsidies in the form of Obamacare tax credits for health plans that include abortion, and strengthens disclosure requirements for unsubsidized plans that include abortion.

“The SBA List is grateful for the bipartisan leadership of pro-life Representatives Chris Smith and Dan Lipinski in advancing this much needed legislation to stop taxpayer funding of abortion. A nationwide poll released only yesterday confirmed a majority of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion. Even 40 percent of those who say they are ‘pro-choice’ and 41 percent of Democrats do not want to be complicit in the deaths of unborn children through their tax dollars,” said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.

“Pro-life women legislators led the debate on the floor today including Reps. Diane Black, Liz Cheney, Virginia Foxx, Vicky Hartzler, Mia Love, Kristi Noem, Martha Robey, and Ann Wagner. We are encouraged and thankful for their leadership, which is further evidence of the broad support this policy has among women,” she continued.

“House passage of this legislation is the first step towards fulfilling a promise made by President Trump to keep taxpayers out of the abortion business. He and his administration are working for the American people, not the abortion lobby. We urge the U.S. Senate to follow suite so that this bill can get to President Trump’s desk as soon as possible.”

President Trump has made four specific commitments to the pro-life movement, including making the Hyde Amendment permanent law to protect taxpayers from having to pay for abortions.

Marist poll released yesterday found that a majority of Americans (61 percent) oppose taxpayer funding of abortion, including 40 percent of those who say they are “pro-choice” and 41 percent of Democrats.

Susan B. Anthony List and its connected super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, knocking on more than 1.1 million doors in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 465,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
