Executive Action Follows Victories for Life at Supreme Court and in One Big Beautiful Bill Act
Lincoln, Nebr. – Today Governor Jim Pillen and members of his administration announced an executive order stopping forced taxpayer funding of abortion businesses, like Planned Parenthood, in the state’s Medicaid program. The funds will be redirected to high-quality health care providers that do not end the lives of babies in abortions, Pillen said.
State officials noted, and local media have reported, “dysfunction” at Planned Parenthood centers in Nebraska including botched tests for HIV and syphilis. A New York Times investigation found patterns of substandard care and shocking, unsanitary conditions at Planned Parenthoods nationwide – all while the organization’s abortions, taxpayer funding and political spending hit record numbers.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s June decision in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic cleared the way for states to stop funding abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood in their Medicaid programs. In July President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which defunded the Big Abortion industry of a year’s worth of federal funding – approximately half a billion in taxpayer dollars.
SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser praised Pillen, saying:
“Governor Pillen is a tremendous champion for unborn children and their mothers. We commend his leadership and echo his words: ‘Not a dime’ of taxpayer money should ever be forcibly funneled to the abortion industry, which ends the lives of countless children while brutalizing women, too, for profit. It speaks volumes about the abortion industry’s priorities that their response to losing taxpayer funding has been to shutter primary care services rather than cease performing abortions. But in Nebraska and across the country, women have much better options for receiving comprehensive health care and the pro-life movement is happy to assist and serve them. Nebraska values both the lives of babies and the health and safety of women. Today’s action is yet another key step in building a thorough Culture of Life that cares for neighbors in need and welcomes all our children, born and unborn.”
The move is a continuation of Pillen’s broader initiative to advance a Culture of Life in Nebraska. Since May of 2023, Nebraska has protected babies in the womb after the first trimester, and last November voters approved a constitutional amendment cementing those protections. In addition, Pillen signed a law on tax credits for pregnancy centers that provide free ultrasound, diapers, strollers, baby clothes and more to babies and mothers in need. He has also signed a measure to extend the time that newborns can be surrendered at a hospital, fire station, law enforcement agency or emergency care provider (known as a Safe Haven law), resulting in a child being saved.
Pillen joins Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt in taking bold action to stop taxpayer funding of the abortion industry since Medina.
