Calls on Legislature to Enact New Safety Standards for Abortion Facilities, Undo St. Louis Ordinance Declaring Itself an Abortion “Sanctuary City”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today praised Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens for calling a special session of the state legislature to address a local ordinance declaring St. Louis a “sanctuary city” for abortion and to enact new health and safety standards for abortion facilities in the state.
“Gov. Greitens won the Governor’s race having made a strong commitment to pro-life initiatives, and now he’s working to deliver on those promises. We thank him for calling back the Missouri state legislature to address the health and safety of women inside abortion facilities and to undo the chilling action taken by the city of St. Louis to declare the city an ‘abortion sanctuary,’” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The Greitens administration recently moved to enforce a longstanding law requiring abortion facilities to report abortion emergencies resulting in women being removed from the clinic by ambulance. Local pro-life activists in St. Louis have observed women being taken away by ambulance at least 66 times since 2009. Clearly, Gov. Greitens understands the urgency here and that the lives of women and children are on the line. We urge the state legislature to address these matters quickly.”
Gov. Greitens previously spoke out against the St. Louis ordinance which added abortion to the city’s anti-discrimination law. The effect of the law is that pregnancy resource centers are under attack and pro-life organizations may be forced to hire people who are not pro-life. Pro-life building owners could also be forced to rent out space to abortion facilities or advocates.
During the 2016 election cycle, a team of nearly 50 SBA List canvassers knocked on 48,000 doors across the “Show Me” state urging low-propensity pro-life voters, including Democrats, to support Gov. Greitens and other pro-life candidates on the ballot.
