Support for Late-term Abortion Limits & Parental Consent Includes Strong Majorities of Democrats, Independents, Women, Pro-choice Voters
Washington, D.C. – A new poll of Florida voters released today by Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) finds that:
The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, legislation to stop late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy – a point when science shows unborn children can feel pain – has been introduced in the Florida legislature by Senator Joe Gruters and Representative Tommy Gregory (SB 0558 and HB 1345, respectively). Senator Kelli Stargel and Representative Erin Grall have also introduced parental consent bills (SB 1774 and HB 1335).
SBA List announced it is partnering with the Florida Family Policy Council and Pensacola-based attorney and lobbyist Anna Higgins of Walker Strategies, LLC to advance these bills, the groups’ top pro-life legislative priorities in the state.
“Three in four Florida voters agree that the national status quo of abortion on demand through birth under Roe v. Wade is too extreme,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The popularity of laws to stop painful late-term abortions after five months, more than halfway through pregnancy, and to protect vulnerable underage girls cuts across demographics – Democrats, Independents, self-described pro-choice voters, women in greater numbers than men – and underscores how radically out of step the Democratic Party’s abortion agenda is with the American people, even their own rank and file. With a clear mandate from the voters, it’s time Florida joined the growing number of states that limit late-term abortions and recognize parents’ right to protect their children and unborn grandchildren. We thank our pro-life allies in the Florida legislature for championing these common-ground bills and urge both houses to vote on them as soon as possible.”
“The United States is one of only seven nations that allow elective abortion after five months of pregnancy,” added Anna Higgins, SBA List’s Florida lobbyist. “We are encouraged to see Florida lawmakers taking action to rein in some of the world’s most permissive abortion laws. These bills have a solid foundation in law, science, and public support, and we will work tirelessly to get them passed.”
John Stemberger, president of Florida Family Policy Council said, “For the past 20 years, polling has consistently shown that Floridians overwhelmingly support laws requiring a parent’s consent before a minor undergoes the irreversibly life changing surgical procedure that is abortion. This poll confirms the same thing is true in 2019.”
The Tarrance Group conducted telephone interviews of 500 registered Florida voters between February 25 and 27, 2019. The margin of error associated with a sample of this type is +/- 4.5% in 95 out of 100 cases.
The poll comes amid nationwide outcry sparked by efforts in New York, Virginia, Vermont, New Mexico, Maryland, and Illinois to legalize abortion on demand through birth, while Democrats in Congress have repeatedly blocked the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, popular legislation to protect babies born alive in failed abortions.
President Trump in his State of the Union address called out the Democratic Party for their support of late-term abortion and even infanticide and called on Congress to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
