Republicans Cannot Win Elections Without Pro-Life Base Voters
Washington, D.C. – In response to The Washington Post’s report on a new poll showing that, by 14 points, Democrats are more certain to vote than Republicans this fall, SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser issued the following statement:
“Alarms should be ringing over the historic enthusiasm gap the GOP is facing ahead of midterms. Another new poll backs up what we’ve been seeing and warning about for months. The consultants are wrong: pro-life base voters are not ‘cheap dates.’ They will sit out if the Trump-Vance administration refuses to address the rising abortion rate undermining state laws, or if candidates abandon long-standing principles like the Hyde Amendment. Letting this happen is both political malpractice and a failure of moral leadership – and it starts with decisions at the top, without a single mention from the president in the longest State of the Union address in history.
“This comes on the heels of yet another case in which a woman was reportedly poisoned with mail-order abortion drugs and a baby, already loved and named Presley Mae, was stillborn. On top of that, Makary’s FDA, which approved a new generic abortion drug and has slow-walked its promised safety review for months, will hand out bonuses for speeding up new drug reviews.
“One of the latest poll’s saddest findings is that Democrats are widely viewed as out of touch – and we agree – yet Republicans still lose by ignoring and demotivating their base. Time is short to win back disenchanted pro-life and MAHA voters. We appreciate all our allies in the states and Congress who reject the ‘cheap date’ falsehood. The GOP as a whole must take back the fight for unborn children and their mothers and go on offense to stop the bleeding at the polls.”
A nationwide survey conducted by Cygnal finds that Republican primary voters overwhelmingly disapprove of allowing mail-order abortion drugs and back pro-life policies like the Hyde Amendment. 32% would be less enthusiastic about voting in the November midterm election if GOP leaders abandon pro-life policies and 34% would be less willing to volunteer – numbers that rise even higher among the most engaged GOP voters.
Last fall, McLaughlin & Associates also found 7 in 10 likely voters – including 57% of liberal voters – approve of requiring a doctor visit to receive a prescription for abortion drugs.
