WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight, Susan B. Anthony List-endorsed candidate Kelly Ayotte defeated pro-abortion Democrat Paul Hodes in the New Hampshire U.S. Senate general election. (A running tally of SBA List-endorsed pro-life women victories can be viewed here.)
“Ayotte provides authentic female leadership to the U.S. Senate that is representative of women’s lived experience and includes a strong pro-life shift in opinion,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “She represents the flowering of the original pro-life roots of the women’s movement which rejected the notion that the rights of unborn children and their mothers could be detached. The future for Senator Ayotte and women in politics looks bright.”
In the weeks leading up to the New Hampshire primary election, the SBA List launched a $150,000 independent expenditure campaign highlighting Ayotte’s unwavering pro-life leadership, including radio ads, Google web ads, print ads and voter mobilization efforts.
With no pro-life women currently serving in the U.S. Senate, Ayotte’s win makes her the first pro-life woman U.S. Senator elected to the 112th Congress.
The Susan B. Anthony List spent $11 million during the 2010 midterm elections, including: $3.4 million on its “Votes Have Consequences” project targeting self-described “pro-life” Democrats who voted for abortion funding in the health care bill; $2.3 million on its efforts to elect pro-life women to the U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and Statewide Office; and $1.4 million spent defeating pro-abortion incumbents and protecting pro-life leaders. SBA List members across the country bundled over $600,000 in direct contributions to candidates. Overall, the SBA List was involved in 90 races.
