What Republicans Are Saying About Abortion Drugs
At least 1.1 million abortions happen in the U.S. every year – more than before Dobbs – and abortion drugs made easily available by mail since the Biden administration account for over 60%. Addressing our nation’s abortion drug crisis is a priority for pro-life members of Congress, as well as pro-life Americans and advocates. As we speak, mail-order abortion drugs are taking more American lives than fentanyl, cocaine, and heroin combined, and sending countless women and girls to emergency rooms across the country. A growing number of women are poisoned by others, and some have also died.
Fifty-one senators, 175 representatives and 21 attorneys general have called for the end of mail-order abortion drugs and the immediate restoration of in-person dispensing. The Trump-Vance administration is not only out of step with the GOP base on this but with an overwhelming number of elected officials.
Here’s how pro-life leaders have been calling for action:
The U.S. Senate Called a Hearing
In January, the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a hearing led by Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) to address America’s new public health crisis: abortion drugs.
Chairman Cassidy’s opening statement outlined the dangers of abortion drugs, which can now be easily bought online and shipped through the mail after the Biden administration removed safeguards such as in-person doctor visits.
Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), an ob-gyn who has delivered thousands of babies, underscored the serious risks of distributing abortion drugs online without first performing an ultrasound.
Senator Jim Banks (R-IN) highlighted mifepristone’s black box label, the FDA’s strongest warning regarding potentially serious or fatal side effects: “Do you think that any drug with a black box warning should be prescribed online?”
Senator John Husted (R-OH), Ohio’s junior senator, spoke about his own adoption and wondered whether he would have survived had abortion drugs been as easily available at the time.
Senator Ashley Moody (R-FL) pressed pro-abortion witness Dr. Nisha Verma (a Planned Parenthood abortionist) on how men are obtaining these drugs online from across state lines, poisoning women and unborn children.
51 U.S. senators sent a letter to FDA, HHS
Fifty-one senators, a majority of the U.S. Senate, led by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) sent a letter to the FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services calling for immediate action. The letter lists recommendations to swiftly end Biden’s mail-order policy and reinstate commonsense safeguards while the FDA’s promised review on abortion drug safety is underway.

As the letter states: “The ‘abortion-on-demand’ culture enabled by the Biden-Harris administration’s removal of critical safeguards on the only FDA-approved abortion regimen is currently the biggest threat to unborn life in America today… Today, your agencies have all the information they need to bring an end to previous Democrat-administrations’ abortion drug regulations while a comprehensive review is conducted.”

Following the letter from 51 U.S. senators, Chairman Cassidy also sent an oversight letter demanding answers from FDA Commissioner Marty Makary.
His letter states:
“In light of the FDA’s approval of another means of chemical abortion under the same flawed REMS framework, it is imperative that you provide an update on your review of mifepristone and your plans to reinstate necessary safeguards. To be clear: this approval fails to mitigate the risks to women that have been identified and fails to protect women from the coercive use of the drug.”

The House Speaks Out
The outrage extended beyond the Senate, as 175 House Republicans sent a letter to the FDA echoing the call for action. Their letter also urges a swift end to Biden’s mail-order policy and calls for restoring basic, commonsense regulations.

When the Trump-Vance administration approved a new generic version of the abortion drug in September, members had swift and decisive responses.
Here are just a few of many statements from the House of Representatives:
House Values Action Team Chairman Rep. Robert Aderholt (AL-04):
“The FDA’s approval of a new generic version of the abortion pill, mifepristone, endangers women’s health and disregards the value of life. Previously approved versions of this drug demonstrated dangerous side effects including life-threatening sepsis, infection and hemorrhaging. The FDA’s own fact sheet on mifepristone shows troubling rates of adverse events including hospitalization, blood transfusions, and even death following use of this dangerous drug.”
Rep. Sheri Biggs (SC-03):
“As a medical provider, I find the FDA’s approval of another abortion pill is reckless and politically driven. Mifepristone has a well-documented record of dangerous side effects, yet unelected bureaucrats continue to push it forward.”
Rep. Marlin Stutzman (IN-03):
“My heart aches for the children who will now face death because the FDA decided our country needed a more efficient route to extinguish the lives of our most vulnerable. I pray that this decision is swiftly reversed.”
Rep. Bob Onder (M0-03):
“The FDA’s rush to approve another version of mifepristone endangers women’s health and disregards the value of life. This drug has a well-documented history of serious complications. The FDA should be protecting women and the unborn, not rushing to expand access to dangerous chemical abortions.”
Rep. Brian Babin, D.D.S. (TX-36):
“The FDA’s approval of yet another generic abortion pill is reckless and deeply troubling. These drugs aren’t safe, and no amount of political spin can change that. Studies from the Charlotte Lozier Institute show that chemical abortions, now the most prevalent form of abortion, dramatically increase the risk of an emergency room visit. We’ve seen tragic cases of severe complications, hemorrhaging, infections, and even death.”

AG Liz Murrill, Senators Cassidy & Hawley Addressed the Media Alongside SBA
Senators Josh Hawley and Bill Cassidy joined SBA Pro-Life America for a media call condemning the FDA’s decision and urging the agency to restore safeguards to protect both women and their babies.
Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO):
“I have received no explanation to date as to why the FDA would approve at a generic at a elevated pace, an expedited timeline, a drug that is under serious safety review or supposed to be that is associated with these heightened medical risks. So, my plea to the FDA is to follow the science. I want them to conduct the safety review.”
Senator Bill Cassidy (R.-La.) – a medical doctor – explained why there is simply no replacement for in-person care when it comes to screening for abuse, or for potentially deadly conditions like ectopic pregnancy, and because of the elevated risk of complications like hemorrhage, infection, sepsis or the need for surgery. He also emphasized, “You want to make sure the person’s not being coerced.”
Cassidy and his Republican colleagues are still looking for answers from HHS and the FDA – and soon.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill also spoke out on the media call. Together with abortion drug coercion survivor Rosalie Markezich, they are suing the FDA for allowing mail-order abortion drugs. Murrill called out Democrats for using dangerous drugs as their plan to circumvent pro-life laws after Dobbs and stripping human contact – including in-person doctor visits – out of the process.

The Red States Pleading for Help Stopping Abortion Drugs
Missouri, Kansas, and Idaho have joined forces in federal court to challenge the FDA’s loose regulatory regime and approval of new generic mifepristone, arguing that mail-order abortion drugs undermine both women’s safety and state pro-life laws.
Florida and Texas sued the FDA over its illegal approval and progressive removal of abortion drug safeguards. As the states note, “The FDA’s regulation of mifepristone was political from the start,” with the Clinton administration redefining pregnancy as an illness to rush the drug to market.
Louisiana, along with abortion drug coercion survivor Rosalie Markezich, is suing the FDA. Abortion drug poisoning is a crime in Louisiana — but out-of-state actors continue to mail the drugs in anyway.
“If the Biden FDA had not removed in-person dispensing, my then-boyfriend would not have been able to obtain abortion drugs and pressure me to take them against my will,” Markezich says — and her baby would still be alive.
In Fall 2025, Texas enacted a law allowing private citizens to sue abortion drug companies, including those based out of state or overseas.
A coalition of GOP state attorneys general led by Arkansas AG Tim Griffin sent letters to Congress and the FDA urging restoration of abortion drug regulations and action against out-of-state providers undermining prolife laws.
Arkansas AG Tim Griffin, South Dakota AG Marty Jackley, and Texas AG Ken Paxton issued cease and desist letters to abortionists illegally advertising abortion drugs in states that protect unborn children.
North Dakota AG Drew Wrigley issued a January cease and desist order against an abortion fund promoting illegal drug sales; undercover buys found providers didn’t require health info, age, or identity.
In January, Kentucky AG Russell Coleman subpoenaed six gas stations advertising Mayday Health, a group steering people to online businesses willing to violate state law
The Consensus Is Clear: Pro-Life Officials and Americans of All Stripes Want Swift Action on Abortion Drugs
The message from both lawmakers and the public is clear: The FDA’s reckless approval of another abortion drug, AND Biden’s mail-order abortion drug rule defies common sense and public will. A national poll shows that 7 in 10 voters want to roll back Biden’s mail-order abortion policy and restore in-person doctor visits – a safeguard the FDA has abandoned.
A new nationwide Cygnal poll shows 80% of GOP primary voters, including 84% of self-described Trump Republicans and 85% of MAHA Republicans, believe the FDA should require in-person visits for abortion drugs.
As members of Congress and pro-life leaders call for accountability, Americans are demanding the same: restore safety standards, protect women, and defend life.
“The Biden COVID-era policy allowing abortion drugs in the mail with little to no medical oversight should’ve been rescinded on day one of the administration. Instead, nearly a year later, more unborn children die, more mothers end up in the ER, and more women and girls are poisoned or coerced into taking abortion drugs. Pro-life states are being completely undermined in their ability to enforce the laws that they passed. We are overdue for action. Women’s health and the lives of millions of Americans are truly on the line.”
– Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America
