Mothers have always been at the heart of the pro-life movement—and at Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, that’s especially true. From expectant moms to grandmothers, we spoke with women across our team about how motherhood has shaped their lives and strengthened their commitment to the pro-life cause.
For Moriah Johnson, Virginia State Coordinator for Her PLAN, this Mother’s Day carries a new kind of significance—because she’s expecting her first child, a baby boy. She’s experiencing firsthand the miracle that inspires her work.
“My pregnancy has helped me realize how amazing our Creator is,” Moriah reflected. “He created the woman’s body to grow and sustain a new life—and I haven’t had to think about how it’s happening. God is knitting this little one together inside of me.”
Working for Her PLAN, which connects pregnant women with life-affirming resources, Moriah’s own experience has made her more attuned to the real challenges many moms face. “While this is such a sweet time of anticipation, I’ve also gotten a small window into what the women we advocate for are going through. I’m so thankful for the support I have—but many women don’t have that. Even something as simple as buying maternity clothes reminds me that not every mom can afford those basic needs.”
One moment in her pregnancy especially reaffirmed her belief in the value of life. “At my 20-week appointment, I saw all his organs and body parts in so much detail. He was so developed and active. Now when I feel him kick and punch, it’s a constant reminder—this is a real human life with his own movements, his own personality. God is wonderfully making him.”
Kathleen, SBA’s Human Resources Director, became a mother through adoption—and describes it as one of life’s greatest joys.
“Adoption is an incredible opportunity. It’s not just about one family giving up a child—it’s about two families who love a child coming together to create the best possible future. It’s a beautiful example of sacrifice and love.”
She and her son Charlie are part of an open adoption, which she believes challenges a major cultural misunderstanding. “Adoption doesn’t have to be the end of something. It can be the beginning of a relationship where a child is loved by multiple families. It’s not done in secrecy anymore—it can be a joining of two families who love a child unconditionally.”
When asked why adoption isn’t more promoted, Kathleen didn’t mince words. “It doesn’t make money. The abortion industry profits from abortion—adoption doesn’t bring them revenue. That’s why they ignore it. But adoption is a powerful, beautiful choice that more people should consider.”
Genevieve Plaster, Senior Editor and Director of Publications at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, has worked in the pro-life movement for over a decade—but says that becoming a mother brought new depth to her work.
“Now that I’ve experienced motherhood, working in the pro-life movement is even more meaningful. I’ve seen firsthand the wonder and uniqueness of each child.”
Being a mom enhanced her appreciation for the research CLI conducts, especially on prenatal development. During her pregnancies, she regularly used CLI’s Voyage of Life tool, which offers photos and scientific facts for each stage of life in the womb.
“I used Voyage of Life throughout my pregnancies,” she shared. “Before I could even feel my babies move, I could see what they were doing—how they were growing, what their little bodies were developing. It made everything so real and personal.”
Just like Genevieve, Maggie, a Senior Executive Assistant and new mom to baby Eva, followed Voyage of Life closely during her pregnancy.
“It made me so much more pro-life,” she shared. “I could feel Eva kicking and moving in the womb. She was completely dependent on me to sustain her—and that made it real. I followed CLI’s Voyage of Life every week and loved seeing how she was developing. It’s amazing.”
Right from the start, Maggie was struck by the miracle of new life. “I Just felt so much excitement when I held my baby for the first time. It really is such a miracle!”
Now on the other side of pregnancy, she understands how vital it is to support other women. “It would be so hard without support. Community matters.”
Marlene, SBA’s Pennsylvania State Field Director, is a mother and grandmother—and her passion for the pro-life cause has only grown with time.
“Becoming a grandmother of two beautiful little girls has changed my life. I’m even more passionate about the pro-life cause now. My daughter was 19 and in college when she got pregnant—and someone in the family told her to have an abortion. But she knew she had me. She knew I would stand by her, like I’ve stood by so many women before her.”
She remembers how unprepared she was during her own early pregnancy. “I was afraid, alone, uneducated. But pregnancy matures you. Back then, we didn’t have the resources moms have now. That’s why pregnancy centers and maternity homes are so important.”
For Marlene, motherhood is more than a personal calling—it’s a sacred duty. “Once a life is in the womb, we are stewards of that child. Our children are gifts from God, and it’s our job to nurture them.”
Her granddaughters have only deepened that conviction. “I thought I couldn’t be more pro-life, given what I’ve been through. But now, every time I look at them, I know even more: life is beautiful. Life is legacy.”
Communications Director at the Charlotte Lozier Institute Laura Pham, has told countless stories through her work—but none more meaningful than her own journey into motherhood.
“Watching Madeleine develop during pregnancy, even when she was so tiny, she was already loved. There will never be another baby like her.”
Since becoming a mom, Laura sees the needs of women in a new light. “After I had Madeleine, I realized how important postpartum support is. I was lucky—my family helped with meals, cleaning, and watching her so I could nap. It truly takes a village.”
To women who fear motherhood will hold them back, Laura offers a different view. “Our culture says babies are a burden—that they make life harder. But motherhood has made my life so rich. You can’t bottle the feeling of your baby looking up and smiling at you just because you exist. Everyone deserves to experience that kind of love.”
At SBA Pro-Life America, our mission is rooted in love—love for children, for women, and for the extraordinary gift of motherhood.
The moms who power our movement are proof that this work isn’t just about protecting life—it’s about celebrating it. They remind us that motherhood isn’t a burden to escape, but a gift to embrace.
This Mother’s Day, we honor them for showing that every child is a miracle—and every mother deserves support, celebration, and a culture that values life.
