Senate Democrats Urged on by Extreme Abortion Lobby Led to Change in Rules
Washington, DC – Today Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell moved to change the procedural rules of the Senate and end Democrats’ filibuster of Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. Supreme Court.
“We thank Majority Leader McConnell for invoking the constitutional option to end Senate Democrats’ unprecedented partisan filibuster of Neil Gorsuch,” said Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser. “This step was necessary because Democrat Senators, urged on by the extreme pro-abortion lobby led by NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood, were determined to obstruct this exceptionally qualified nominee. The stage is now set for Gorsuch to be confirmed with or without pro-abortion ideologues like Senator Schumer, who have only hurt vulnerable Democrats up for re-election in 2018 by standing in Gorsuch’s way and encouraging others to do so. Susan B. Anthony List has been rallying the pro-life grassroots behind Judge Gorsuch’s nomination for months and now we look forward to his speedy confirmation.”
Immediately after the announcement of Gorsuch’s nomination, national and state pro-life groups, spearheaded by SBA List, announced the launch of the Pro-life Court Coalition to rally support for Gorsuch and ensure his swift confirmation to the Supreme Court. For weeks, the Coalition has rallied grassroots online and on the ground in support of Judge Gorsuch. In addition to an online petition campaign, the coalition has focused its efforts on Senate Democrats up for re-election in 2018 states by holding rallies and press conferences in Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, North Dakota, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Florida.
Last month, sixty Pro-life Court Coalition members sent a letter to the U.S. Senate urging Judge Gorsuch’s confirmation. The letter cites Judge Gorsuch’s opinions in the Hobby Lobby and the Little Sisters of the Poor cases, as well as his dissent in a case where a 10th Circuit panel sided with Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider. The letter also notes Gorsuch’s book, The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia, where he states that “human life is fundamentally and inherently valuable” and that “the intentional taking of human life by private persons is always wrong.”
President Trump has made four specific commitments to the pro-life movement, including nominating pro-life justices to the U.S. Supreme Court.
