Draft Legislation a “Huge Disappointment” for Pro-Life Hoosiers
Washington, D.C. – Today as the Indiana General Assembly convened a special legislative session called by Governor Eric Holcomb, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America called on pro-life legislators to strengthen Senate Bill 1, authored by State Senator Sue Glick. SBA Pro-Life America’s Director of State Affairs Sue Liebel was at the Indiana Statehouse today to advocate for the protection of the unborn.
“Following the Dobbs victory, Hoosiers finally get the opportunity to have their voices heard in abortion policymaking, and they have made it clear that they want to protect unborn children and their mothers from the horror of abortion after electing a pro-life supermajority in the legislature,” said SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The first draft legislation put forth by Senate leadership is weak and a huge disappointment for pro-life Hoosiers across the state. The bill is problematic in many areas, but most especially in its lack of enforcement mechanisms, which could even lead to abortionists performing late-term abortions without penalty. Indiana is one of a few pro-life states that does not have strong protections for unborn children in place. We will work tirelessly with our allies at Indiana Right to Life to be as ambitious as possible to pass a bill that meets the expectations of Hoosiers.”
Since the Dobbs decision, at least a dozen states have taken action to protect life. SBA Pro-Life America has launched an interactive map to track life-saving laws in the states and the estimated number of abortions impacted.
Dannenfelser continued, “Hoosiers should not be fooled by Vice President Kamala Harris’s trip to Indiana today. President Biden, Vice President Harris and Democrats in Washington have one goal: mandating abortion on demand, up until the moment of birth, paid for by the taxpayers. Abortion on demand paid for with tax dollars is not a Hoosier value.”
