SBA List Urges Gov. Kasich to End Lethal Discrimination Against Children with Down Syndrome in Ohio
Washington, D.C. – Yesterday the Ohio legislature sent to Governor John Kasich’s desk a bill that would prohibit abortions from being performed because of a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome. The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) released the following statement in response:
“We commend Ohio lawmakers for moving to end lethal discrimination against unborn children with Down syndrome,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Research has shown that individuals with Down syndrome are among the happiest people in the world and bring tremendous joy and love to their families – but, tragically, mixed messages from society and many in the medical community target them for abortion at alarming rates. In some Western nations these vulnerable children are even on the verge of being eliminated from society through selective abortion, and this is considered ‘progress.’ The entire human family is impoverished when children’s lives can be ended because of dated, biased perceptions about their worth or abilities. We urge Governor Kasich to follow through on the signals he has given and sign this bill quickly. We look forward to the day when measures of ‘perfection’ and ‘wantedness’ are no longer deadly yardsticks but rather all unborn children are welcomed in life and protected under the law.”
Research by SBA List’s education arm, the Charlotte Lozier Institute, and the Jerome Lejeune Foundation USA has found, and the experience of thousands of families has shown, that children with Down syndrome are extraordinarily happy and bring their families enormous blessings, despite particular challenges they may face.
