SBA List Slams Gov. Wolf for Vowing to Veto Compassionate, Common Ground Pro-life Protections

Washington, D.C. –  Yesterday the Pennsylvania legislature sent to the Governor’s desk the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and Dismemberment Ban, which would end late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy – a point by which science shows unborn children can feel pain – as well as barbaric dismemberment abortions in which babies are torn limb from limb. Governor Tom Wolf, who is facing re-election in 2018, has promised to veto the bill.

“The Pennsylvania legislature just took a bold step to protect unborn children and their mothers,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List). “Momentum is building to pass a national ban on late-term abortion more than halfway through pregnancy. The U.S. is one of only seven countries that allow abortion on-demand after five months, putting us in the company of China and North Korea. Shame on Governor Wolf for pledging to veto this popular, compassionate legislation. His extreme pro-abortion stance is radically out of step with Pennsylvanians as he prepares to face the voters in 2018.

“SBA List thanks our National Pro-life Women’s Caucus member Rep. Kathy Rapp, who helped shepherd this bill through the House. We are encouraged by the legislature’s action and look forward to the day when all unborn children are protected under the law.”

Polling done on Election Day 2016 found that a large majority of voters – women in higher numbers than men – support the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. The U.S. House has approved a federal version of this legislation twice, and it has been introduced in the U.S. Senate. Signing this bill into law is one of four major pro-life commitments made by President Trump.

A 2013 poll by Harper Polling found that 82 percent of Democratic primary voters in Pennsylvania think abortion should be illegal in all or most circumstances.

Susan B. Anthony List and its partnered super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, knocking on more than 1.1 million doors in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 465,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
