Kaine Once Again Tries to Muddle His Position on Hyde Amendment
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) slammed Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine for attempting to mislead voters on his abortion position.
“Tim Kaine would not be on the Democratic ticket if he did not support Hillary Clinton’s plan to repeal the Hyde Amendment and force Americans to pay for abortion on-demand with their taxpayer dollars. Tonight he tried, once again, to muddle his position, but voters should not be fooled,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The Hyde Amendment has saved more than two million lives and protected conscience rights for four decades. Clinton and Kaine’s extremism is at odds with a majority of Americans – even many of their fellow Democrats – and will hurt their chances for victory on Election Day.
“Gov. Mike Pence has been an unfailing advocate for women and the unborn since day one of his public service,” continued Dannenfelser. “Tonight he eloquently defended the sanctity and dignity of every human life. Donald Trump could not have made a better choice in the selection of his running mate.”
In July 2016, Tim Kaine changed his position on the Hyde Amendment five times (timeline).
A recent Marist poll found that a majority of Americans (62 percent) oppose taxpayer funding of abortion including 45 percent of those who say they are “pro-choice” and 44 percent of Democrats. According to Gallup, one-third of Democrats identify themselves as pro-life.
In a letter made public by SBA List last month, Donald Trump outlined four pro-life policy commitments, including his pledge to make the Hyde Amendment permanent law.
