Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America and our partner Women Speak Out PAC have reached an incredible milestone of making 4 million visits to voters’ homes across eight key battleground states. In Pennsylvania, our team of 81 canvassers has made more than 400,000 voter visits to these homes. Eager to see how we achieved this, I drove up to Harrisburg, PA to learn firsthand how our canvassers are making such a massive impact for life this election cycle.
My journey began at a local coffee shop outside Harrisburg where I met the dedicated canvassing team eager to share their experiences with me. Among them was our Pennsylvania Field Director, Marlene, who recently had an article written about her titled “What Am I Doing with My Life?” Marlene’s Journey to Leading Our PA Team, which documented her path to becoming a pro-life advocate.
After a quick introduction, I received my SBA pro-life baby blue shirt, and Marlene taught me the ropes of canvassing, including how to use an app to track the homes I visit, and record voters’ responses to our survey questions. Once we wrapped up my training, I was all set to team up with one of the full-time canvassers and get some hands-on experience. With my shirt on and directions in hand, I was ready to start knocking on doors!
I paired up with a veteran canvasser named Dale, a former schoolteacher and passionately pro-life woman who canvasses at least 5 days a week. Dale quickly took me under her wing and taught me how to properly speak to voters in a bold but compassionate way. She explained that the questions we ask at the door are designed to provoke thought in the people we talk to. She told me that making people think about their views on abortion gives us a chance to share the truth about the issue with them and highlight how extreme Kamala Harris and Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senate incumbent Bob Casey are on the issue.
We began knocking on doors and encountering a mix of opinions. One of the first people we met was a proud pro-life woman who identified as a “Trump girl.” We chatted about the pro-life movement, and she assured us she’d be voting for life this year. We went on to meet several supporters who were excited to vote for President Trump and Pennsylvania Republican Senate nominee Dave McCormick, including a young woman and her family who thanked us for the work we were doing.
However, not everyone was on our side. We spoke with a nice man who was planning to vote for Harris. This man was very cordial and open to discussing the issue. After going through the survey, he agreed that late-term abortion was wrong and that candidates shouldn’t support it. After that conversation, Dale noted down our discussion on our canvassing app, and we hoped that we might have planted a seed for him to reconsider his vote.
We spent the rest of the day going door to door, chatting with anyone who answered and leaving door hangers when no one was home. It was a busy but rewarding day that deepened my respect for the important work our field teams are doing across the country. We saw many Trump yard signs and spoke with several voters who were committed to supporting life by November 5th, which gave me hope that we might see a positive outcome in this year’s elections.
Our canvassers really are the heart and soul of this movement. There is no doubt that by engaging with voters at their doors they are making a meaningful change in the upcoming elections by making sure that voters know the truth about the radical pro-abortion policies of Kamala Harris and her Democratic allies!
When the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, our movement was given a historic opportunity. But the battle for life became much more difficult.
